SPL - Sound Pressure Level
SQ - Sound Quality

Is that what you are looking for?

Yes -- I know there are different subs for each. but how would I tell the difference if I didn't already know what my setup was for?

I'm not too sure about that. But there is more to it than that. Most competitions have both a SQ and SPL part to it. The are however competitions for just SPL (dB drag racing...) you may be able to find some more info at:

SPL deals more with overall loudness of bass whereas SQ deals more with clarity of music. If your setup is for alot of bass it's an SPL setup. If it's setup up to equally play a range of different frequencies(high and low) it's an SQ setup.
