replacing stock HU requires new door speakers?

Hey all.

I have a 96 maxima with the stock bose system. The cd player portion crapped out on my so now I only have radio.

I went to a car audio place and they told me if I bought a new head unit I would have to replace the door speakers too, is this correct?

thanks.

no, you do not have to get new door speakers. I got this thing from crutchfield when I got my new hu and it works great with the bose speakers. Cost was 50 dollars.

No this is completely false. I believe the BOSE operates at 1 ohm as well as their speakers. Many aftermarket HU's operate at 4 ohms. Like a 8 ohm subwoofer all you have to do is buy at 1 ohm to 4 ohm converter or a crossover to make this work (not too sure on it's technical name). Many org-y members had used aftermarket HU with stock speakers. A cheaper and quicker fix would be find a nice HU search it up on ebay and buy some speakers to go with it. The stock speakers are crappy and some ebay speakers like the OZ audio's 6.5's I have are excellent and I only paid $25 shipped. I just purchased a JVC Arsenal SX8350 HU for $135 shipped. All I need now is some midbasses ($35 shipped) to complete the setup. All together that's under $200. In most audio dealerships you will get charged a hell of a lot for I problem that leads to other problems. The choice is up to you.

hehe Im not hating on the bose HU, I liked it but it crapped out on me. The only complaint I had was that it would skip a lot on burned cd-r's when it was real hot outside, but I guess I can blame that on texas's hell like temperatures. black on black leather int doesn't help either.

Thanks for the info guys
