adding a sub with stock nonbose HU...

I'm sure this had been asked before, but i couldn't search for some reason. I have a 97 Max with non-bose system, and i wanted to upgrade my sound system abit. I wouldn't want to spend money on a head unit right now, so i was wondering if there's a way to add an amp and subs to the stock HU. Would i have to buy some king of converter to hook up an amp? would sound quality be much lower than using a $150 HU? also would i be able to use the bass function of my stereo to adjust the subs?

PS. I was going to use 2 10in Alpine Type R's, and i'm not sure on the sub yet.

THanks alot!

Yes you can add them, you don't need an adapter, u can splice the speaker wires into rca's and use those as low level input on the amp (rca's). no the sound quality would not be much lower than using a $150 hu. yes you would be able to use the bass function of the stereo to adjust the subs.

Well, you don't even have the details of your car in your .org Profile... fill that out and people will be more willing & able to answer your questions the first time around.

I wouldn't recommend this. If you're going to splice into the speaker wires, you will want to plug them into the HIGH level (speaker level) input on your amp. If you want to use RCAs, you need a line-out converter, to down-convert the high level speaker signal into low-level RCA signal for your amp.

the output level of the bose headunit is low, they are preamp's to the bose amps. i have had mine running for a while, no problems. to each their own.

and you were right, it was my mistake, the nonbose would have higher outputs than the bose since they are more than just preamp signals. i wouldn't do it my way either unless you have a bose stereo.

ok, thanks alot for the info. I think i'll pick up a converter with 2 "gold plated" outputs from a local audio store for about 50 bucks. So down the road i can add an amp for my speakers.
