my first "accusation" is that the voice coils wiring has come loose, or the wires on the terminals have become loose (disconnected)

i don't think that's it, since it plays normally after an initial push to get it to move. if the wiring is lose, won't it play sporadically due to the cone movement.

how hard did your friend play his sub?

just mid levels to show that it worked perfectly fine when u applied pressure, it was an infinity, he said his friend wired it up and it was a pretty ****ty looking box and a stock deck, had a jensen amp and converter i think

Your voice coil is probably seperated. It will probably start working if the volume is turned way up too. It is getting the electricity to make that first jump across the gap that is a problem.
