Adding Extened range antenna to Viper responder alarm

who here has added the optional Extended range antenna to their Viper respnder alarm? I have a 690XV and would like to be able to monitor the alarm from class and inside stores since the stock antenna doesnt work when im further away.

Worth it? How much farther will it work? stock antenna said it should work 1/4 mile away in optimal conditions, you think I can double the range with the extened antenna?

Well I have the 791xv and when I'm at work I can monitor my car from in the building and I'm on the third floor of my office building. I can see my car from the window and I can start and get signals from my desk. Now I don't know if my antenna is much different than yours but I know I have two antennas coming from where my rear view mirror is

Yeah it has one center piece with one antenna piece coming out of each side. And it sits right behind the rear view mirror

mines like that too, I believe those came stock with the responder series alarms, Im not shure if that extented range antenna that I mentioned above is a totally different upgrade or maybe its the same as what we have and is an "upgrade" to vipers basic alarms. From the Pic of it at DEIs website, it looks different, it has one super long antenna rather then the 2 small ones on the sides. Im gonna ask the shop soon and see what they say.

The reason we have 2 antennas is because one recieves the signal from the remote and the other one sends the signal to the remote. I'm probably gonna get the range extender. We have them at my work, I will check it out and get back to you guys today.

think you looked at the price above the item, which is wrong.. price is below listing .. 24 bucks, for that price it might be worth it just to try and see if it helps.

i got a bunch of extra goodies & this was one i was looking at...i even called viper themselves (760-598-6200) & talked to a tech. there.
He said the Range Extender Antenna wont work on my 791xv since its already at its fullest range...the Range Extender Antenna is only for older alarms.

He did say I can have my local installer take off the 'rolling code' option for better range. I think he said the 'rolling code' is that alarm changes code every time its activated or disactivated so nobody nearby can pick up code with a device & use it to gain entry to your car.

what's up fellas...

i'm an installer, and the shop i work for sells only dei, so i have experience with viper, clifford, avital, etc. etc...

the 542t antenna that you're looking at won't give you any increased performance than the antennas you have already. the 542t is an "XHF" antenna, which gives greater reception over the "HF+" antennas on many lower grade alarm systems. Also, the 542t will not work with the Responder system (or the Clifford RS2.5 and 3.5) because it doesn't include both a receiver and transmitter. It is only a receiver. Hope that helps

Ok thanks, that clears things up for many of us.

may I ask about proximity sensors? are they plugged into the brain itself or do they have their own source of power ect? what comes with the sensor when I buy it and would I have to have it programed to the brain? thanks

A proxy sensor or field disturbance detector is really easy to install. Here's the link to it - model 508D ($87.00) http://www.directed.com/security/access/sensor.asp.

It has a stage one trigger and a stage two trigger. The sensitivity is adjustable for stage one and two independently. When somebody wants to peep your car, if they get too close, the 508d will trigger stage one and give a warn-away. If the offender continues to stand in the field or continues to move closer, it will trigger stage two. Also, if your windows are down, and somebody decides to look or reach inside, it will trigger the panic instantly. You give it 12 volts, ground, tie in stage one with the door trigger, tie in stage two with the instant trigger, and install the 508d module in a central location in your car. When I install them I usually mount them in the center console area (concealed, of course )

I've got the 508D installed on my 690xv - definitely spend some serious time with it to get the fields where you feel comfortable - chances are, you don't want the outer field to be too large, or your alarm will be going off constantly - i've got my outer field set way down, and the inner field set to where if you reach in through an open window, it's triggered. Again, take some time to set it to where you wont be woken up at night, interrupted while at the movies, etc. because of people walking by your car.
