Need your honest suggestion on an amp.

I bought a ed120 DVC4 and need a suggestion for a "budget" amp. The elemental designs website recommends sealed 1.5cf enclosures. I was looking for something in the range of 450w - 600w.

To my understanding DVC 4 ohms can be wired to 2ohm and 8ohm.

Thanks in advance guys.

Also is there a SQ difference between an enclosure that's 2cf as opposed to 1.5cf?

If I go with 2cf the recommended power range would be 150 - 350w rms.

I don't have personal experience with that sub, though I've heard good things about the ED sub. I would stick close to manufacturer spec. If you go larger, the sub may go a lil lower and not qet quite as loud. If you went significantly smaller, you'd prolly get a peak round 50-70 hz making it sound louder and punchier...but again...the manufacturer knows their subs best.

As for amps, you need an amp that does 2 ohms mono. The JBL BP 600.1 is the first one that comes to mind for me and it can be had cheap on ebay from some reliable sellers. they also make the smaller 300.1. It is a class D amp and some say they can hear a difference in SQ compared to class AB but others like it cause class D is easier on the electrical system. JL's 500/1 should also work well.

If you'd like to come up with a budget and other details, I could try to think of some more if you want. Good luck

Thanks for the recommendations BBOYSTEVIE. I've heard good things about the JBL BP series amps. Not sure how much they retail for but on ebay it looks like the 600.1 is going for around $185 without shipping. I was hoping to keep my price down below a hundred for a quality used class D amp, but i'm not sure if that's feasible.

That's why i'm thinking about going with the 2cf enclosure so I can use a smaller amp. Elemental recommends either a 1.5cf or 2cf sealed enclosure.

You can still use the smaller amp with the smaller enclosure. No problem there.

Personally, I'd really try to get 400-600 watts. Keep you eyes on the sounddomain.com and elitecaraudio.com for sale forums and see if you can run accross a deal..Remember though, most "standard" 2 channel amps cannot be bridged mono to 2 ohms (usually just 4), but some can.

best luck...100 is a tight budget, but where there's a will, theres a way.

argh who knew picking an amp would be this hard. haha. And I thought picking a good sq sub was tough.

The more and more I research the more I see that I will have to up my budget.

One other question (might sound stupid)... If I got a 2 channel amp, instead of bridging to 2ohm mono, would it be possible to just hook up one channel (left or right) and leave the other unconnected?

but those will cost more becuase they will be class a/b and they will drain your electrical system more because they are less efficient. for driving a sub, id use class D amps.

for $100 bucks u can't get much really,

Profile Mono Channel Amp

Visonik Mono Channel Amp

Rockford Fosgate Mono Channel Amp

those are the cheapies i see on ebay right now, the profile, although most people will tell you to stay away from, isnt really all that bad, it is better than boss/pyle/legacy/ and all those other low budget brands...

this is a 4 channel profile that would give you a good amount of power to both voice coils

Profile 4 channel Amp

Good Luck

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I've upped the budget to 150. SO far i've been looking at a lot of 600x1 amps and I think I can snag a JBL 600.1 for that price. Some people have been recommending certain models of coustic amps as well, but to tell you the truth i'm kinda wary of using profile, coustic etc. ... I know beggers can't be choosers though.

sk24iam once you go with one O how big is your box gonna be? Do you think there would be much of an Sq difference between 1.25 and 2ft^3?

I'm a fan of Soundstream amps after having installed one of their 2-channel Edge Series amps recently (their lowest line).

Check this out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

$149 for a Rubicon Series II (RUB500-1). I'm pretty sure its a Class D mono amp rated at either 400W x 1 or 500W x 1 at 2 ohms (can't remember which).

Someone else here might have more experience with the Rubicon Series amps...
