for ELECTRONIC SPECIALISTS, problem w/ my radar
for ELECTRONIC SPECIALISTS, problem w/ my radar
Hey guys...
I have a weird electric issue in my car. I have my radar hardwired and it goes off ALL THE TIME.
I called Passport and they said there are issues with the wiring in my car.
Sure thing, i put the thing in my 6th gen max and NO ISSUES!
I am wondering if there is such a thing i can buy somewhere, like a filter that attaches to the wiring that filters out w/e is causing the radar to go off.
Anyone?

Could be picking up interference from the cars elecronics. Do you have it hard wired to the vehicle fuse box or direct to the battery? Also where is it grounded? Sharing ground with other stuff could cause noise.
Also, are you saying that it only goes off all the time in one car? You tried it in two seperate vehicles, everything else remained the same? Even doing that you need to keep the unit in the first car and just run the power wires to the second car.
There are definitely noise filters available but they should be a last resort. www.davidnavone.com is the place to look. He's the best noise troubleshooter in the industry. He also is a ham radio operator so he has experience with that specific noise "type".
Another issue is the location you live. The tri - state area has radars in use all over the place. It may be tough to get 5 miles from a radar. That and the fact that there may be a few EE's out there with home built radar jammers setting off your system. And the vast number of two way radio's and cell phones in operation. I don't remember the frequency bands of speed radar and I don't know how narrow your detector detects.

Thanks for the responce Jmax.
The radar detector is hardwired to the radio + and grounded i dont remember exactly where.
I went out to radio shack this morning and purchased a fariet filter. When I get my car back from the body shop, I will give this thing a shot.
But so far, with the radar detector in my 2004 max, I have no issues. It hardly ever false alerts and works perfectly.
I'm starting to think that it could be because of my satelite radio....

Your satelite is just a receiver. And I am pretty sure the frequency band is well above the radar bands.
If it is hardwired to the radio it's most likely sharing power and ground. That means you can easilly pick up noise from the fuse box and the ground.
