I Need help on making a custom trunk

this may be a little hard to follow, but i will to my best to explain.

Ok, so this is what i would like to do with my trunk. i want to build an amp rack on the floor of my trunk to hold my three amps. each amp is approx 4 inch's tall. now, i figure to leave one inch of space for the amps to "breath". so that brings the total up to 5 inch's. but lets keep that in the back of out heads for a second...

now, here is what i plan to do. i am going to take out the mat for the trunk, and place it on the peice of wood. i will trace the mat, and then cut out the board. this board will be used for the very bottom layer for my floor. now, i will build a box frame (just four peices of wood in a rectangle with no top) in the middle of the floor that will hold my amps. and then i will make another cut out of the floor mat and place that peice of wood on top. (basicly making a sandwhich.) i will cut out a hole and place plexi-glass in the hole so i can see the amps and what not.

but here is my question, in doing this, i will be raising the floor of the trunk about 6 1/2 inches then normal. but i can not think of any other way to do this. i think my trunk will look kind of odd if my floor is praticly even with my trunk latch! lol... well... maybe not that high, but i think you understand my concern. can anyone help out with this? i know some of you have the setup that i want to do. so if anyone could please let me know in how you accomplished this, i would be greatly appreciative. thank you.

Well first off I would find amps of a lower profile. Mine are 2 11/16". I'm sure you can find even thinner ones. Then you could also cut down that 1" of breather space to say 1/2" and install a couple of computer fans to help airflow. 3/4" wood for the top and bottom, 1/4" plexi cover sunk into the 3/4" wood gives you your half inch breathing space. So with my amps the total would be 3/4" + 2 11/16" + 3/4" = 4 3/16". Much better than 6.5". You can even squeeze out another 1/4" if you want and use 1/2" wood on the bottom.

Just suggestions. Let us know how it goes and get pictures of the results.

Thanks for the responce, there is no way i can get new amps that are smaller... i do not that that kind of money to do that. maybe some day i will.
it also stinks because i bought 3/4 inch MDF wood for this as well, not thinking about this problem. I am going to attempt this project tomorrow on my day off, so i will let you know how it goes. if i think it will look too funny, i have two other ideas that will look good, and since i have two huge sheets of this MDF wood, My options are limitless.... maybe i will grow the corage to build my own sub box. no way i could do that in a day. but i will start off small.

and i will def post pics when i am done... but i may not do any thing more then just get the floor down for tomorrow... i have many errands to do. i'll keep you posted.

you can shave 1/4 inch off the board where you want the amps to lay, so they sort of sit inside the would, or you could make cut outs in the 3/4 in mdf and stick the amps completely inside there with some sort of backing on the bottom of the wood pieces.

is the box just around the amp doesn't seem structurally sound. suba and a sub box are pretty heavy.you could take out your spare and have the amp shelf mounded up to the main trunk floor you are gonna cut. miht as well cause what it sound like your putting in there is gonna bee too heavy to get the spare out anyway

ok, well after thinking about the whole trunk issue, i was really in a bind. i was not sure what i wanted to do... so i didn't do much work yesterday. i have to give this process a lot more thought then i originaly planned. but for now, i just cust out a floor board, and bolted the amps to the box, and to the floor. i made everything neat except for the crossovers since i will be finding a better spot for them soon. take a look at some pics....

thanks buddy. I like it as well... i mean it looks really sweet when the seats are down, but when i open the trunk, it is like... bla. all i have is this plain looking box just stilling there. i really want to do something cool with the trunk, but i do not know what. also, i think i will miss having my amps visiable through the back seats.

on a side note, i have major rattles comming from the trunk support bars. is there any way to get rid of that? thanks

lookin good. how do you like the type r's? for the rattles try some egg crate foam or any type of sound dampener.

Hey that setup looks familiar... oh yeah, that's almost just like mine, lol. I have two Alpine V12's on the back seats with one JL 12w3 in a sealed box.

Good job!

thanks guys. the type R's are ok. they have decent bass, but it is more sloppy bass then nice tight cleen bass. which is ok depending on what type of music you listen to. i will most likely upgrade to two JL W3 subs instead. as far as the rattles, i did secure the rear deck, that is not making any more rattles, but it is the support bars for the trunk that rattle. (the bars the move with the trunk when it opens to keep it from falling.) that, and my rear view mirror, rattle quite a bit. i need to find out how to take of the mirror without breaking it.
