So this guy offers me a good deal on a 12' soundstream turantula sub. I really like it and think great. Then he tells me it needs a special amp and that is going to cost me almost $400. He says it needs to be a sounstream amp. Is this true? IS the turantula 1000w RMS? If so what amp could I use to power it but at the same time be reasonably priced?

Run, don't walk, out of that shop. That guy is trying to take advantage of you. That sub has dual 1Ohm voice coils so it can be wired up at either .5 or 2 Ohms. Look for an amp that puts out around 800 watts or so at 2 Ohms and it should work. The better question is are you going to run it sealed or ported. That sub has a free air resonance (Fs) of almost 37Hz. It really won't work very good sealed.

There is NO such thing as a sub "nneeding" a special amp. The guy is blowing smoke up your a$$. Any amp will work fine with any sub.

Thanks for that guys. I am just starting to learn a bit more about car audio stuff now. I just realized I wrote 12' sub instead of 12" sub. haha. I woud have a hard time fitting one of those in my house let alone my car.
