Separates/Component systems ina 5th gen

for those that have installed separates for the fronts in the factory locations, what did you use and where did you mount the crossover box at? also, are you running them with the stock radio or aftermarket radio/amp?

I am looking to upgrade my sound, and I know the best first step is through a new head unit, but for now, I want to retain the factory look, so separates are the next big thing. I have bose in my car.

Just curious, can you tell me the route the wires take after they go through the crossovers? I am installing a component set soon and want to know how you got the signal up front for the tweeter and midrange.

I'm sure you know there is a tweeter and midrange input and output on the crossover itself. I ended up running many feet of speaker wire from the tweeters/speakers back to the crossovers, and to the amp. Its a lot of wiring, but the mounting location seems perfect for these crossovers IMO.

What about the midranges? Did you use the factory wire?

I just tucked the crossovers up under the dash. Saves on the speaker wire since you only need to run a single pair from the amp to the crossover.

a/d/s components-

Cross-overs in the kick panels:

Tweeters in stock locale:

Woofers in the stock locale:

The stock locations are a good spot. Some people put the tweeters in the doors, but that puts them too close. You'll notice that your stock tweeters and the stock woofers are almost exactly the same distance from your ear. There is a reason Nissan put the tweeters in the A-Pillar and not the door.

Ah, I see. For the midranges did you tap the factory wires or did you run new wires through the doors? If through the doors, no did you do it?

I am at a dilema. I have the bose system in my car, and I am going to replace the head unit and add a 5 channel amplifier. I can't decide which way would be the easiest, yeild the best results, and cut the least ammount of factory wires.

-leave crossover in trunk, run new wire for tweeter, use factory wire for midrange and tap wire at the connector for the bose amp.
-same as above, but run new wire for midrange as well, either tap wire before they hit the door, or run new wires through door
-put cross overs up front, run new wire from amp to crossover to tweeter, either tap wires before they hit the door, or run new wires through the door for crossove to midrange.

someone please help, I'm lost

kojiro - does the kick panel hit the crossover box when it is installed? what about the tweets? do they come in contact with the a pillar? also, is it possible to run the speaker wire to the door speaker with the existing harness? is is it a plug in type of connection on the door?

I'm not Kojioro but I'll give you my $.02 anyway. Put the crossovers where ever they fit. It doesn't matter wher as long as they don't rattle. The tweeter bolts to the A pillar and probably makes contact with the trim piece. I ran my own wire to the doors and if you actually take the time to inspect the factory wiring you will too. I actually took apart the factory connector and drilled through it, most people on this board put new holes in their doors. You can't simply run new wire through the existing flex tubing.

Yup, what he said.

I think my tweets do touch the molding a bit, but they are caged and protected so no big deal. There's no vibrating or rubbing going on.

I took some pictures of the door wires when someone else asked. They aren't the greatest, but here they are. I tried doing the factory connector, but it looked like a big PITA, so I just got a long drill bit and drilled.

I am using a stock deck non bose and put the crossovers in the trunk. I am also running an amp to the components which are placed in stock positions.

I would recommend an amp for the compnents. I tried my comps with the stock deck power and it sounded like crap (but thats for me i don't know what everyone else experienced). If you do decide to keep stock deck and run an amp, i used a line converter and tapped the tweaters. Then I wired some new wire from the crossovers to the comps.

When you do run your new speakers, you will need to either get some spacers or use the old speakers as spacers by punching out the magnet and woofer and keeping the ring intact.

why is that? is it because if you go too deep of a magnet, the window wont go all the way down?

Yup. I don't know the exact clearance. But as long as you have a spacer of some type, either a piece of MDF you cut or by using the factory speakers as a spacer, then you will be fine. I have never heard of anyone not having enough clearance for their 6.5" woofers when using a spacer. I am sure it can happen, but they would have to be some monster woofers.

i noticed that when i put in my 5 1/4" (i shoulda bought 6 1/2" )that my magnet wouldn't even allow my speaker to sit flush with the door. But with a spacer, there is enough clearance.
