Compustar 2WSS vs. Viper 791XV
Compustar 2WSS vs. Viper 791XV
I need help with choosing the better alarm out of these two. I know that the Compustar runs on 900mhz frequency, and the range is like 1.25 miles. Which one do u guys think is better? Which one do u guys recommend?
HELPPP!!!
HELPPP!!!
791. I sell/carry both. For range the Compustar is def leading. For dependability, reliabilty, warranty DEI is the better choice.
Not to mention all of Compustars parts are quite large. Nearly twice the size of the Responders remote. Brain, antenna, shock sensor, etc are all larger as well...

ahh Don ur the man, i just added u to my AIM buddylist cuz i know u knew u would help me out. Anyways, i think im leaning towards more for the Compustar 2WSSR, i need the range, and i guess the size of the compustar products doesnt bother me too much.
U sell the Compustar? talk to me...

hehe....he just put one in yesterday in a rather PITA install- everything in that alarm kit was huge- the windshield antenna was ridiculously large, not very aesthetically pleasing but It has to be I guess to work that range i suppose....

The pager isn't used for remote starting, its used to PAGE you incase your alarm goes off.
I have the Viper791 and have had no issues with range. The equipment used was much more compact than even my older ViperES500 and it does twice as much. For the price and installation, I would go with the Viper791. As for the extra remote, you can pick them up between $70-$90. I recommend getting them both before the install. This is to save time by only programming the remotes once.
DEI is very much established. For those that don't know, they pretty much make a ton of other alarm systems as well, not just Viper. You can get almost the exact same alarm and features packaged in a different "name" of DEI, such as Hornet.
The range: 2wss is far superior. This is good when you are talking about the 2way feature. You want the most range when it's trying to find you to tell you something is wrong, not simply remote start. The key fob for the 2wss displays a lot of info.
The bells and whistles: Again the 2wss has far greater expandability than the 791. The 791 will be limited to the number of outputs that it has from factory. The 2wss not only has additional outputs from factory, but you can also add the expansion module that adds an additional 5 more outputs to work God knows what, but it's available. 791 doesn't have that. So the nod here goes to the 2wss. The 2wss also comes with a built-in turbo timer AND you can program it to remote start 5/6spd cars. Again, this IMO gives the nod to the 2wss.
The install: They are both about the same. Really depends on the car. Some cars are a PITA to work on no matter what you're putting in it. The antenna of the 2wss is kinda big, but if you want range....something has to give. The programming of the remotes is rather arduous on some cars, but most are pretty easy. They are both pretty even in this arena. No clear winner.
The cost: Hands down the DEI Viper. It's going to be somewhere between $200-300 cheaper. This may be where the Viper wins the overall for most people. If money is a big factor, the Viper will definetly win there. No contest here.
The warranty: Both have lifetime warranties on the brain, but Viper offers no warranty on the remote. Compustar offers a 1 yr warranty on the remote, as long as it's not obliterated and stomped on. The 2wss is the only alarm in the Compustart line up that DOES NOT come with 2 remotes from factory. Every other alarm, including the 2wfm (which is more comparable to price, range, and features to the 791) does come with 2 remotes from factory. No clear edge here since most of the electronics are harbored in the brain anyway. Both have good warranties.
Reliability: Again, I would have to speculate that both are gonna be about even. All alarms have an issue sooner or later. A bum remote, varying range, occasional false, etc. Reliability should be looked at more in terms of "does it do what it's supposed to?" and "for how long?". In those terms, there's no clear winner there IMO. I've seen just as many "issues" with both. 90% of those "issues" are consumers expecting more than the alarm can do in the first place. So take that with a grain of salt.
If price is the prevailing issue, go for the Viper 791. It's a very good alarm. No problem with feeling a false sense of protection at all. If money is not as big an issue, you may want to look at all the features the 2wss has and CAN have (think about future upgrades). It definetly is not cheap, but it's also very capable right out of the box. On the 2wss, you're paying a premium for some features no other alarm in that price range offers. The long distance, 2way monitoring, expandability, spread spectrum signal (long distance again), built-in turbo timer, 5spd remote start capable, vibrating remote, paging, etc. are all nifty features IF that's what you want either now or later.
I've had the 2wss for almost a year now. I've not had any issues at all so far. My only complaint, petty as it is, is that the remote is bulky. I've been asked if that's some kind of "new" phone or something. It's that big. I guess it has to be to be able to transmit the 2way as far as it does. I've lived with it for almost a year and it hasn't killed me. Some of you may be different.
Again, these are all MY opinions and observations.

Yes DEI makes several similiar alarms. The ones in the same line are Clifford and Python. Hornet has been dropped.
Yes the Compustar is supior with range, and I will not argue that point at all. Although from 1.25 miles away your alarm goes off what can you actually do? (This isnt a correction, just an opinion)
The 791 from factory has Three additional available channels. Compustar has Two. Therefore Viper having the lead. Also the channel expander is still produced and available from DEI adding up to 15 additonal channels. Still Viper has the lead. 791 DOES also include turbo timers. Manual tranny issues...yes Compustar has it available with their units, but ANY remote start is capable of Saftely remote starting the car when installed properly.
Warranty is yes of course Lifetime on both units. BUT how many Compustar dealers are there as opposed to DEI dealers? You may have to drive 50miles to a Compustar dealer, when you can find a DEI dealer just about anywhere nowadays. Remotes for the 791 are also covered for the first year under warranty. I replace them all the time.
As for reliabilty..yes again correct for the most part...but being that DEI much further established and if by chance there is a problem a dealer can most likely be found easier. Compustar released their first unit in early 1999 decades after DEI, so reliabilty is really hard to decide yet at this point being that they have only been available just past 5years.
I do make both units available as well as other systems. I am in no way biased towards either in a that sense. Just trying to clarify a bit more on your post.

When he originally did the alarm install writeup I faxed him all the tech sheets. From 1992-2004. I can also send those to you if needed. As far as a write up I really have nothing. As I stay pretty busy and doing these is like a second nature to me. I wouldnt even know where to begin trying to write it up. LoL
I could of course give ya a hand via phone or PMs like I have for many others....

Don,
Thanks for the clarifications on the Vipers options compared to the Compustar. You beat me to it. I thank you for all of your expertise in this department. All of your input has been greatly beneficial.

Yeah, but when you are already stuck carrying a phone and a pager the last thing I want is an alarm fob that is nearly the same size as my cell.
