3rd gen speaker confusion

Hi there, stupid newbie chick here to bother you since there's no search function. Thanks in advance for putting up with me.

Everything I've read says that my '94 GXE (non-Bose) should have 6x9" speakers in the rear. I ripped out my seats and found circular speakers. I measured, and they're 5.25". The mounts in there are circular also. I'm really glad I didn't buy new ones before taking a look.

I bought it used, and it was a salvaged vehicle before that (the guy fixed it up and resold), so I guess it's possible that it was all rebuilt back there or something, changing the mounts. Looks stock to my inexperienced eyes.

What do you guys think?

yeah, all non bose speakers in 3rd gens are 6.75"s in the back and 4x6's up front. sure they're 5.25"? I bought some alpine 6.5s to replace the rear and some boston acoustics 4x6 for the front.

Thanks for the response. It sucks that any "find your speaker size" information only mentions the Bose size.

My measurement includes only the speaker and not the mounts. Just to be sure I had it right I measured the 4x6's in the front the same way, and it checks out. So yeah, 5.25".

Anyone else have speakers this size?

those 5.25"s stock? as far as i know, all 3rd gens had 6x9 or 6.75s in the rear, not 5.25"s unless someone swapped them out prior to you owning the car.

Don't know if this helps, but the back says "Clarion 090-0100-88" and "Japan", among many other numbers.

Like I said, this car was salvaged, and I don't know too much about it. I remember only that the rear and side were smashed. The guy I bought it from buys salvaged cars, makes 'em like new and resells. You'd never know unless you asked. It's possible that that was entirely redone.

I'll take some pics in a minute here...

You can fit 6.5 in the front where the 4 by 6 is some people make new speaker housings but if youre cheap then you can cut the original 4 by 6 slot and make it so that 6.5s will fit in there they cut my stock area and it sounds fine

I'm not going to do anything too complex. Standard sizes are good enough for me - I'm not going for an incredible sound or anything. Just something better than my blown out (not very) Active Speakers.

Yeah, it sucks. Really dumb design. Took me a while to figure it out, and I actually owe it to this guy. Stupid Chilton's manual didn't say anything about how to remove it, and after days of wondering and looking, I read on that site that all I had to do was freakin' pull them out! It really isn't that hard to do, but it's really, really stupid.

I'm gonna be redoing my whole system (again, started with bose) with 6.5 components up front, a 15 in the trunk too...i blew the woofer on my 6x9s, I have bose but it's all replaced, can I just take off the rear deck and put some 6.5s in there or will i need a bracket or something from a non bose car?

Heh, I'm not going for pricey, just bought some cheap ones off of eBay. The brand is called Pyramid. I got some Pioneer 4x6s for the front. I know you guys would go for something better, but all I want is basic, cheap sound. The amp doesn't work, and I'm just going to rewire it without an amp instead of buying a new one, since I really don't need it.
