$400 usd for custom 8" sub enclosure??

I'm having an 8" sub installed in my trunk, but the enclosure must be built to fit so that the 8" is pointing in through the hole between the trunk and the cabin. When you flip down the armrest in the back, you'll be viewing the sub.

The place I took my car to for a quote on this gave me a $400 USD figure just for building and installing the enclosure, and amp (plus the wiring to the trunk).

Am I getting ripped here or what? Or is this a normal cost for something like this?

(1995 max)

[edit: the cost is NOT including any audio equipment, just the install/build]

It really depends on fit and finish. Will the box be molded to the floor? What materials will be used in the construction. The price is a bit steep. I payed $220 for my enclosure that was costom built for my Max. It housed three twelves and that included the install.

hmm

Yea I'm thinking I will build it myself, can't be too hard. I can always use thick paper sheets to make a prototype first and then trace the ply wood or whatever later.

Any recommendations on materials? I was thinking simple - plywood, or mdf and then cover it with some sort of felt lining or ???

Don't use the normal Home Depot type plywood...it's crap. If you can't find Baltic Birch ply just use the 3/4" MDF.
