alright this is my first box im building and its sealed its a 2x4 mdf board. its for a 12inch cvr kicker. i think it needs 1.5 cubic feet. neways i made the height 20icnes, width is going to be 8inches, and the width of the front of the box is 16inches. this is a 2x4 wood and i need 2 more pieces of wood though for 2 more 8 inch panels, or should i get plexiglass instead

If you made sure the plexiglass was sealed to the wood properly, it probly wouldnt cause too much of a problem, and it could also make it look pretty cool. If its not too expensive, go for it, and if its expensive, just get s'more mdf.

well if you don't have the wood available just take one board and do a behind the seat deal where here it a ported box since the trunk is your box.

If it's your first box make it easy on yourself and make it all out of MDF. Leave the fancy stuff for later on after you've got more practice. Are you really sure you need 1.5ft^3 for a single 12? Seems kinda big. Where did you get this info.?

and that plexi, unless you know how to work with it do it, but if you don't leave it alone. plexi does not cut like you think. never mind drilling trough it, it cracks and ****. its tough to work with.

im deciding to make my box 20 inches wide and 14 inches high, the depth would be 8 inches. now my ques is, is this too big of a box for a 12? the bigger the box equals more bass right?

don't forget to subtract the thickness of the wood to find out the real interior air volume.

omg this thread is crazy. 1.5ft^2 is too big. sealed boxes are not as easy to design as you may think. i had the sub in 1.2ft^2......i recommend between 1.0 and 1.3ft^2 but no bigger....keep in mind that power handling goes down as volume goes up...a smaller box will allow the speaker to handle its rated power but go any bigger and power handling will drop.

if the wood was 3/4 inch then outside demensions would be 13.5" all around to equal 1 cu/ft box.

WTF?! Man you need to convert everything to feet before you multiply the terms together. And it's Volume = Length*Width*Height. Right now you have 37450 in^4.

How 'bout external dimensions 15x15x12, gives you 1.1ft^3 and avoids the perfect cube.

Based on this 1^3 ft box design from eD, you need the following:
2 boards 20x15 (front and back)
2 boards 20x8 (top and bottom)
2 boards 13.5x8 (sides)

Here's a great article by THE sub guru himself, Tom Nousaine - link. As for adding it to the box design, I don't know. I gave you a link to another site earlier that explained the relationship between box size and frequency response. Have you tried any of the modeling software like UniBox or WinISD?

No, Sears will not sell MDF or polyfill...Try Lowes or other local lumber yards for the MDF. For polyfill try the fabric stores, it's used for pillow stuffing.
