Radio Control problem on 01 Maxima Steering Wheel

Radio Control problem on 01 Maxima Steering Wheel
I seem to have a problem of late. The steering wheel controls for changing radio stations (up or down) and selecting the Mode (AM, FM1, FM2, CD) seem to not work at times. Have to press the levers a few times. Perhaps it was becuase it was a bit cold tonight but not that cold in Charlotte, NC.
The volume controls on the steering wheel are fine.
Where does one find this part on line?
Is it hard to replace my self?
Any links with pictures, costs, place to order parts, etc..
Thanks,
Peter

I'm not sure if the weather has anything to do with it. Do you have an aftermarket stereo with the SWI-PAC adapter? If so then sometimes it's not as sensitive as the stock controls. After all, it's an adapter programmed by the remote control of your aftermarket stereo.
But if you have stock parts, then I'd bring it to the dealer.

Steering Wheel Radio Controls
I have a 2001 Maxima SE 20th Anniv and I too am having issues with the Bose radio controls on the steering wheel. The buttons only work every once in a while. Is there anyone out there that has fixed this problem and can tell me what they replaced and/or fixed?
Thanks,
Andrew

I think this is a known issue. Do a search. Mine is doing it and it freakin drives me nuts. I didn't recall there being a fix in the post I read before. I'm actually in process of CDA-9853 install and want to see if hooking up PAC adapter fixes it. Heres hoping....

Let me know how it works out. This may not be a big problem, but is drives me nuts too.
There are multiple posts with others having same or similar problem, but no one lists the cause or fix.
If anyone has had this problem and fixed it, please let us know what you did. I have already removed the radio controls from the steering wheel, opened it up, and cleaned up the contacts and grounds with no success. The controls still only work intermittently.
Thanks,
Andrew

I have this problem too. For me it only happens when it is really cold. I've actually measured this and there is no reading from the wires when it is cold. I have already bought a new button switch, been a bit busy to have it installed though.

So you guys having problems are also using the stock decks too, right?
Here's my response with the steering control and the pac swi-x http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=434195
I had ordered a new stich from daveb about 2 months ago, but have yet to install it since the air bag needs to pop off to get to it. Daveb said it isn't uncommon for these switches to fail. Another guy in a nissan parts dept suggested I try some electronic contact cleaner spray. I know what it is but haven't bought it yet.

25552-4Y903 - this is for frost interior. The first switch I got from Daveb was mislabeled in his inventory, so he sent me the wrong part by accident. I am pretty sure this number is correct for the frost interior.

I have also experienced this problem. I notice it is much worse when it is cold. I also noticed the problem can be remedied by wiggling the steering wheel from side to side very slightly, while pressing the buttons.
Has anyone ever had a problem with their HU switching modes by itself? For example, from CD to radio without pushing any buttons. Does anyone think that is related to the faulty controls?

I happened to notice something that makes me think the issue is not with the steering wheel buttons. When the controls do not work, I can hold one of the buttons (volume button for example) and turn the steering wheel 90-180 degrees and it will work. Did some research and came up with the conclusion that the spiral cable in the steering wheel is faulty. This part allows the steering wheel switches and air bag electrical connections to remain intact while turning the steering wheel. Dealership said the part is $180. Not sure if I want to spend that much money to fix this problem. If I happen to do it, I'll update everyone as to whether or not it fixed the problem.
I also took the steering apart and removed the air bag to get the radio switch out. Took the switch apart the circuit board and buttons looked like they were new. Nothing wrong. All the grounds in the steering wheel looked good too. That again makes me think the spiral cable is the problem.

That was my fear. It makes no sense for the buttons to go bad. I talked to daveb and he said inside the spiral cable, its a post with a bunch of contacts rubbing against it, so it makes sense if its the culprit. I haven't tried to replace my buttons yet, so I cannot give a definite answer.

I too have a 2001 Maxima 20th anvry edition w/Bose.
The steering controls did not work when I purchased the vehicle.
I also own a 2002 with steering controls that work fine.
Having a background working on cars I dug into this issue.
First the 2002 and 2001 are totally different units.
I have the CD manual for the 2002 and the unit is wired real simple.
The steering control unit goes thru the spiral cable to the radio directly.
I had to order the CD manual for the 2001 because it is totally different.
The control on the steering wheel is pretty much the same, it is a processing unit with no contacts, all electronically controlled thru a processing chip.
That signal is fed by one wire thru the spiral cable.
On the passenger side kick panel below the glove box there is a 2" by 2" black box.
In it is a processing unit that is powered by a 10 amp fuse (location#1) in the junction box and takes the info in and in turn sends it to the radio thru multiple wires.
I did not find a way to test the switch but I tested the spiral cable by removing the Airbag and disconnecting the cable connection and confirming continuity thru the spiral cable.
At this time I replaced the switch (part # 25552-4Y900)($70) but that did nothing to help.
I was trying to diagnose this with the 2002 CD when I confirmed there were major differences in wiring between the years.
Upon buying the CD manual for the 2001 I then found the second part of this equation is the steering wheel receiver control switch (25556-4Y900)($60) located in that passenger side kick panel.
Upon replacing this the controls worked again.
Every situation is different but this was my situation.
I found http://www.nissanpartszone.com/ was a big help on the parts and fairly priced.
Hope this helps!
