Built my First Box this Week
Built my First Box this Week (Pics)
A few days ago, I ordered my Adire Audio 15" Tempest (been waiting to order for 3+ months) and decided I'd start building the box for it...I'd like to thank slick_rick for all his help and invaluable knowledge..
First I went to Lowes and bought a 49"x97" piece of 3/4" MDF..at Lowes they'll cut it up for you so I went in with the dimensions Rich gave me for roughly a 2.5 cubic-foot box..the exterior dimensions were as follows:
height: 17"
width: 24"
depth: 14"
So I calculated it all up and found that the dimensions for each piece should be as follows:
front/back: 24"x17"
top/bottom: 24"x12.5"
sides: 15.5"x12.5"
Had him cut it all up and when I get home realize the guy working must have been drunk/tipsy/high because all the pieces that needed to be 24" long were 25", and some of the pieces had a huge slant, which I don't understand how it happened considering he was using a precision machine; dumbass..
Put it all together using liquid nails, and some regular thin nails I had laying around. I measured the cutout at 13 3/16" according to the Adire website, and cut that out with a jigsaw, right now it's all put together and im just waiting on the sealant to dry, but other than that I'm pretty much done, I need to carpet it still, but the carpet I have is from Menards and is wayyy too thick for a sub box, anyone know any good places to get then subwoofer box carpet? Anyway, on with the pics!

this is the most professional post ive seen you make.
anyway, the cutout diameter is 13 15/16... you may need to do some cutting once you get the tempest. but try it first and see if it fits.

I just weighed it, after some wrestling to get it on the scale it comes out it's around 32-33 lbs, the Tempest weighs 21, so I'll be adding close to 54 lbs to my trunk..Rich is also right, I read the site wrong, looks like the jigsaw will be coming out again..
I've decided I'm going to paint it because I don't want to deal with getting carpet and having it shipped and then actually doing it...I went to Wal-Mart and got some Fleck Stone (Manhattan Mist) textured paint...I went over all the seams and then got 2 sides done before I ran out, and at roughly $7 a can this kind of pissed me off, I figure I'll worry about painting it all when I get some extra money..I'm gonna get some pics when I get a little more done..I'm gonna cut the whole bigger today, which also ticks me off because it's gonna be aboue 1/4" bigger all around, wish I would have just done it right the first time..I also got a terminal for the speaker wire and have to cut a hole for that too..I'll get post again when I get some pics.
Another Update!
Got another pic for you guys, so far I've got 2 cans of paint emptied onto this baby, and only need 1 more, but thats just for the back and sides so I'm not gonna worry about it, maybe if I sell it sometime or something. I cut the hole to the correct size and also got my terminal mounted in..I superglued it and then screwed it to the box, I wasn't sure if this needed to be extremely secure so I just secured it a lot. I went Wal-Mart and got 20oz of polyfill and also got some screws to mount the sub and amp. I mounted my amp on top (and am hoping it fits in my trunk), it's a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 500.2 and I'm going to bridge it; according to the birth-sheet, my Tempest will be getting 534.79W @ 4ohms..that's what I'm ****in talkin about!
Anywhere here's how she looks: the paint is a lot darker in person, also:

PS: any suggestions on the polyfill, do I just toss it in there? Hook me up..

no he didnt. adire recommends always to put polyfill in the boxes. they actually wanted 32 oz but thats ridiculous. i mean i told him to buy it, try it both ways to compare. lets just hope he keeps that bass boost off...

Wow thats a new one for me, but hey whatever works. Maybe its to lower the sound of the tinsel lead slap....
Ok Ill stop now Im just being a prlck hehe
haha. the only known adire sub i know of that had the problem was the brahma mk1. my shivas never emit the noise and the tempest is my big bro. about the fill, i emailed them specifically awhile ago about it and i frget the whole answer but i feel the recommend it more because alot of their subs are for HT use and might play higher up in the frequency range thus there is still a small chance of standing waves in a cube shaped box which is prevalent in their designs for ht subs enclosures.
For a first attempt, I'd say that it turned out pretty good. I have seen a few guys using nails instead of screws. Out of all the enclosures I have built or been in on, screws have always been used. Don, maybe you can answer this one for me, is there any advantage in using nails? I've just never used them personally.

Got the Tempest today, hooked it all up..my 10s sounded louder...I had it the way slick_rick told me to have it, but my 6.5"s up front beat louder...I turned up the bass on it and it sounds right, but the sub still isnt moving as much as I've seen it move from videos online...anyone have any ideas?
did you do what i told you to do? you will NOT need the bass boost for it to get loud. check and make sure that box has no air leak. obviously if your 6.5 "beat" louder there is a problem. my cdt 6.5's sure dont beat as loud as my shivas...even without bass boost!
i dont see where id have an air leak? with the bass (its not a bass boost button or anything) on 0, the thing barely moves, so far im not impressed with this set up and am about to hook my 10s back up
