How bad is giving a sub too much power

I'm looking at a little 8" image dynamics sub (I know most of you would never get something that small, but I really only want a little bit of bass) that takes 175watts RMS, and a hifonics mono amp that puts out 200watts RMS. Is this a bad thing to do? I could get another of the 2ch amps that I'm getting for the front components instead. It is 90w*2 RMS, so that would be 180w*1 RMS right? Would that be better? I would lose the remote bass control though.

Also the sub is DCV. Is it easy enough to wire a DVC sub with a mono amp.

Thanks for your help!

well, if you turn the gain on the amp down it won't actually be giving it the full 200w...just be careful, and turn it down more if it is distorting at all.

get a 4 channel amp and give 2 to the front and bridge the other 2 for the sub. great sq sub you got there... although id getthis instead...http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSIDQ10D4V2O

remember you can always turn down the bass.

I was considering that...I'm not sure though. If I'd never push it past what an 8" could do then I'd just as soon have less weight. The 8" is cheaper too.

Why do you say a 4ch? They seem to be significantly more expensive. Looking at hifonics (because that's the 2ch and mono I've picked out) I could get a 85w*4ch for $330, or a 90w*2 for $100 and either another of those, or a 200w mono for $150. Granted a single amp wiring kit would cost less than a dual, but not $80-130 (depending on if I got a second 2ch or a mono), and if I went with the mono as my second (which is the way I'm leaning) I would get remote bass control which seems like it would be useful.

then go on a diet! jk, it would be a matter of like 2lbs im guessing since the brahmas are only 2lbs different per size. plus it will ease your mind by going over the rms power for the 8". just some thoughts though...

5lbs for the sub (according to cardomain's shipping weights) and also the difference in box size which I would think could be pretty significant.

The point also remains that I may never push it more than an 8" anyway...I really don't know.

I'd also have to pick a different amp since the 10" is 250w correct? Or would 200 be enough? That would add to the expense.

Thanks for all the help BTW...you've been extremely helpful in this whole process (especially you slickrick).

edit: I edited my above post after you replied, so if you could look at it again that would be great.

wow 5lbs going from an 8 to 10? either way 5lbs is nothing... unlike an XXX which weighs over 50lbs in itself. everyone that i have known has been like... oh i dont want alot of bass, blah blah blah but after awhile you get used to it and want more! but hey if the 8 is cheaper go for it and try it out. if not sell it and go bigger. and if you went with the 10" sub im sure the box sizes are marginal because ID subs are known for small boxes. what about doing a free air install in the rear deck?

What about it? Explain please? I obviously know what you are saying (just stick it in there like a regular speaker), but what effect will it have on sound quality?

well its not my area of expertise but have you ever heard a nice luxury car with their "upgraded" audio system. notice how im not mentioning the maxima bose system eventhough thats a great example of an 8" free air setup. like in the lexus models and even my moms caddy, 8" sub in the rear deck is nice. power handling will go down because the whole trunk acts as a box. also the sub has to be "approved" for it. give me the link to the exact ID sub you are looking at. sq should not really change if done right.

It's the 8" version of that one you linked (that's where I was going to get it even).

I think I'll just box it.

good to see you found CAF. they gave away my "secret" with that ID 8... its so cheap. but anyway the only reason i did not recommend the ed sub is because with their pre orders who know when you get it. just go with the 8" from SD throw it in the 1/2" mdf (it will save weight) and call it a day for now.

Yeah, I've been cheating on you guys...guess I'll have to buy you some diamond earings or something .

That ED sub did look pretty good too, but I don't want to give them my money and have to wait god knows how long for it.

You know anything about the SD "open box" thing? They won't send anything that won't work properly correct? I just might end up with something that's kinda ugly?
