Need Help: Maxima OEM Navigation

We have a 2002 Maxima GLE thats fully loaded. I love the car, except for the navigation. The biggest problem is that its CD based, but i can get over that.

My question is: Does anybody know which wire i can cut or put an inline switch on that tells the navi if i'm moving or not? I hate that if i have a passenger in the car, they can't program the navi while i'm driving. Its a major inconvience

Thanks in advance

I think its in the programing of the Nav but I'm definately not for sure. There probably is a way to do it, though, if its not programmed to run in tandum with the ECU. Were I to speculate, you'd have to trace the wire from the ECU for the speed sensor to where it terminates in the Nav computer and then have the switch mouted there; basically if no speed is seen, then it should fool the Nav computer into thinking you were stopped. However, I am just guessing and I have no idea if that analog system would work for the digital Nav system but I'd say its something along those lines. Good luck and don't tear anything up!

Thanks for the advice. That was my guess too

I'm still a little anxious to start toying with wires until i know for sure.

Anyone else have any idea?

Do most people get rid of the OEM nav, or they just live with it?

that is a PIA but it keeps lawsuits off nissans hands. it is setup so you don't get some blockhead trying to reprogram it while driving and ends up smashing his car.

I know nissan is just trying to cover their butt, however there are many other ways to go about it.

one solution would be if there is weight in the passenger seat, then you should be able to program it. I'm aware that there is always a way to get around that, but no matter what they do, where this is a will, there's a way

I have the pioneer AVIC-n1 on another vehicle, and when you turn it on, it displays a disclaimer and that is it. There is no law that states that the manufacturer must prevent you from programming the nav while driving.

I guess its just that we spent $2000 for OEM nav, and its very inadequate. It has limited capabilites because its cd-based, and its crippled by the fact that you can't program it while driving. If i could do it all over again, I would have gone aftermarket from the start

my 2k2 has navi in it, I hate that its Cd based, i wonder if there is a way to mod it or upgrade it. if it was my car from new I would not have gotten a nav, at least not this one. its fair, but not great.

By default, you are also not supposed to be able to program the navi while in motion. In fact, its designed to work when it senses the e-brake up. However, whoever installed it for you (or maybe it was you) grounded the parking brake wire which is how you're able to use the N1 while in motion.

I did the install and yes i bypassed the ebrake

I've also used portable nav units that don't sense motion

The biggest issue is that its a real PITA that it locks you out when it sense motion

Does anyone know what color the VSS wire is?

On the car? I believe it's pink with a blue stripe.
