Problem with Steering Wheel Controls

About half a year ago, my steering wheel audio controls starting getting finicky. They work on and off, sometimes it helps if I turn the steering wheel to a different position. Sometimes the audio responds right away, sometimes it takes 10 pushes of the buttons, sometimes it's in between. I have a 2K1 GLE with Bose system and never modded any part of the audio. Also, the cruise control steering wheel controls work with no problems. I'm assuming there's a loose connection somewhere, but since I rarely ever work with wiring, I'm hoping you guys can lead me to the right location to inspect. Any help would be appreciated.

Lots of posts on this problem. Some people claim that taking a can of compressed air or even contact cleaner to the controls does the trick. I tried the compressed air trick and it didn't work. I really want to take the the steering wheel controls off but I don't know how to do it. I'm paranoid about tripping the air bag.

Since you guys are talking about the steering wheel controls, I have a question. If I get a new HU, is there any way that I can get the controls on the wheel to still work with the new unit? I heard there was a way, but I'm not sure.

Sorry my friend, I don't know how to do this. I've heard the same thing that it should be possible.

For the controls to work with new HU, you need the PAC SWI-X adapter. Check it out on Crutchfield, but don't buy it there. Buy it on Ebay or from a guy on the org here named cobymoby. Gonna run you bout $60.
