?? for remote start in '00 5 speed

It's getting pretty sad that every shop I contact will not install a remote start in a 5 speed Maxima. Too much liability.. So i'm going to put my own in the car.

A couple questions have come up. I understand all the wiring diagrams and the list that is posted above in a stickey, but do not know how to work around the anit-theft chip in the keys. I've heard that some shops take a spare key and actually put it in the column, to trick the car that a good key is being used. I live in a pretty secure area, but that sounds a little to hoky for me.

Now for the 5-speed part of the deal. I never leave the car in gear, just let the parking brake do the job. Is there some sort of ring that could go over the shifter to prevent starting for the least likely situation I or someone else left it in gear? I was just thinking I could go to the linkage under the car and installing some micro switches around the linkage that would prevent starting if the shifter is forward or back (like its in gear). Also maybe an interlock with the parking brake?? Wiring does not challenge me - I put a 94 fuel injected LT1 into a 86 Monte Carlo (carb'd), so anything is possible.

The other thing is which system has the best distance? I was looking to prefer a 2-way unit, but could do with a 1-way if needed. I have to start the car at least from a 1/4 mile away at work, with almost a direct line of sight to the car. It also does not need to have all the security bells and whistles, just needs to start the car. It seems the Viper is the best for everything, but was looking further down the chain at the Avital 2-way.

Sorry for rambling on, any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

1)The chip in your key simply transmits an RF frequency to a receiver right next to the key cylinder, which you will see if you take apart the steering column. There are modules such as the DEI 555U or 556U, where you leave the key in the module. Then when you remote start, the module is activated and will transmit that frequency to the key cylinder to allow it to start, but the rest of the time (when not remote starting) the module stays dormant. I am pretty sure that Peripheral makes a bypass module that you can program to a certain frequency, if leaving the spare key in your car bothers you. If the alarm is installed properly and the module/brain are hidden it shouldnt be a problem, but whatever floats your boat.

2)Shops do not know that Maximas have a neutral safety switch wire from the ecu, and if you connect the neutral safety switch wire from the alarm brain to this, it guarantees 100% that it will only start in neutral. The ECU is at the passenger side floor at the back of the center console, the wire will be green with an orange stripe, pin #44, and will show ground whenever in neutral. The alarm brain will only remote start if the neutral safety switch wire is grounded, so this wire solves it, and prevents all that hassle you are talking about doing.

3)Ive heard that the Clifford Matrix RS3.5 has a little better distance than the Viper 791xv. I havent personally dealt with any Avital products, but Im sure since theyre DEI they cant be bad.

Hope this helps

Hey Don, will that Viper go at least 1/4 mile? It's about a 8-10 minute walk to my car. But I was just thinking, does that have a timer that would start the car if I set the time just before I got out?
