Never mix sub sizes. You risk cancellation. Different size subs have different wavelengths.

You're crazy not to consider 10's. They take up less room, cost less and can sound just as loud. That said, you will never get SQ out of 2 15's. 2 12's is the way to go if you simply refuse 10's.

Depends. Find 2 DEI CompX10's on eBay (there's one up right now for like $50) and you will be just fine with 2 10's. If you do three (which is sweet also), make sure you have an amp that can handle the load. 4 is overkill as far as available space (a 10's best quality is taking up so little space), but would obviously be louder.

Based on your consideration of 15's, I say 3 high wattage 10's with 1000+ watts (RMS) going to them. 3 x JL 10W6's will slam something fierce, same with those CompX's. 3 x IDQ10's would sound great, or if you could find them ... 3 x Infinity Beta 10's.

A low price does not necessarily mean a bad sub. I actually got more than what I paid for. I bought a 10" sub (RL-i10 dvc) from Soundsplinter ( www.soundsplinter.com )for $159 dollars . The sub sounds really nice, very clean, and deep. I can imagine from listening to my sub, how nice two of these subs together would sound.

Ugh ... and that's the problem. People get stuck on that and brand when it comes to subs and it barely applies. Meanwhile, for component sets and coaxials, it really does matter (although some cheaper sets will blow you away with how nice they sound).

When it comes to subs, any sub will sound awesome ... in the perfect box.

There are subs engineered, however, to handle more power, be more efficient, etc. These will not sound any better, per se, usually only louder ... in the proper box. It's mostly about the box.

DEI is Directed Electronics. Go to www.directed.com and see how many other brands they own. It's Orion, PPI, A/D/S/ and more ... their gear is not well known, but well made and for that reason, it goes cheap on eBay. All the kiddies are searching "JL Audio" or "Rockford Fosgate" or "Adire". I search "Infinity Beta", "Image Dynamics", "DEI", "Viper", etc. You can get a neodymium component set from Directed that will blow away many component sets out there for $100-$150 on eBay without a problem. Try finding Boston Acoustic's that cheap.

you could get 8's to get as loud and low as 15's... the first question is how much are you willing to spend. the second is how do you want it to sound (what are your musical preferences). third, how big of a box. that should narrow it down quite a bit

Putting any sub in it's "perfect" box will get the most out of it but comparing brand x to brand y or even different lines within the same brand will yeild different results.

First, you want a sub with low inductance. It's more accurate since less energy is stored in the voice coil. - woofer speed tech paper
Second, if you can afford it get a sub with a flat BL curve. There's more magnet strength throughout the excursion. There's a few ways to achieve this: XBL^2 and Linear Motor Technology (aka LMT) are just two.
Third, try to find some reviews or tests of the subs you are looking at. I pointed 1996blackmax to the TC2+ distortion test to backup my recommendation of the Soundsplinter subs.
Finally, if you can listen to a sub before buying, do it. While you are listening, find out about the install. Make sure the sub is in a recommended enclosure. See if they are running any bass boost or EQ. But don't rule out buying a sub without hearing it. You will find some excellent values over the internet.

Asking people to hear the subtleties in subwoofer output is an exercise in futility. I'm speaking of real world audible sound, not o-scoped output.

Example: Bazooka tubes are made with about the worst subs out there, but Bazooka found the perfect enclosure for them and consequently, they sound pretty good. They're not awesome by any means, but for what they are, I think they sound okay - some people would argue they sound "great".

I took Robert's advice, & I am very happy that I did.

I had one of my friends sit in my car today after work, and he was pretty impressed with the sound that the sub put out. My sister's boyfriend also liked the way the sub sounds (he said that it sounded tight and clean), he plans on buying a sub from Soundsplinter as well.

What's the rest of your system? How loud do you want it to be? How much are you looking to spend? How much space do you want left over in your trunk? What kind of music do you listen to? etc...

Everyone has their favorite brand of sub, so you're going to get lots of opinions here. If you gave us a bit more to go on it would be helpful. BTW I've always found 12s to be the perfect compromise between 10s and 15s.
