Help with Eclipse Head Unit Install

A couple of friends helped me install an Eclipse 5444 head unit, speakers, amp and a sub on my 03 Maxima (non-Bose). We thought that everything had gone well until that evening when I turned the headlights on and realized that the dash (tachometer/speedometer area) had no illumination. We checked the wiring and everything looked OK. Then I found a blown fuse in the fuse box out in the engine compartment. I believe that it was the fuse labeled: Tail lamp. I replaced it but as soon as I turned the headlights on, it blew again. We tried it again and it blew another. We checked the circuit but found no short.

My question is, did we do something wrong or did we miss something? Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas would be welcomed.

One last thing, the trim piece that came with the Eclipse does not snap into the gap around the head unit. We used the Metra kit. Can anyone with an Eclipse head unit let me know how they got it to fit?

Thanks,
MC

The trim piece around the HU needs a little bit of bending and coercing to get it to fit. Keep trying, you will get it on.

Did you also use the Metra wiring harness? I just installed an Alpine in my 2002 (non-Bose also) with that wiring harness and if you notice, the wiring harness has two illumination wires: one says "illumination" and is just orange, the other says "negative dimmer" and is orange with a white stripe. I'm not sure what the negative dimmer wire is there for, but I just hooked up the orange "illumination" wire to the illumination wire on the Alpine harness and it worked fine. I don't know how this would work, but I'm thinking there's a possibility that if you use that negative dimmer wire you might be screwing something up. Make sure you didn't hook that one up and try again.

Sorry I can't help more, just a thought though.
