Stereo Removal on 98 Maxima

Hey, I got a 1998 Maxima GLE with some pretty nice wood trim around the stereo. I was wondering if any of you know how to go about *safely* removing the trim around the stereo. I need to get it off in order to pull out the stereo. Please let me know if any of you have experiance with this, and what I should go about doing. I love that wood and I dont want to ruin it. Thanks.

your top middle air vents and the temp controls under them, its all one piece. pop it up and pull it out. there will be some screws that hold the 'main' radio trim in place, you also have to pop out the trim around the shifter cause you need to take out the astray/change holder and sig lighter to get to the screws that hold the main trim around the radio, its been a while for me, but thats how i did it.

now i see that your asking about how to take off the wood-trim? im not sure, some kind of razor blade? you dont want it to crack, good luck

So basically once I take out the airvents and the temp control panel, I can get to the screws for the rest of the console right? The wood is glued onto the piece that is going to be removed with those screws right? And the trim around the shifter should just pop off by being pulled? I dont want to be pulling on it if there is a certain way to do it. I dont mean to ask stupid questions, and sound repetitive but I just bought this car about 2 weeks ago, and dont know much about it myself. Thanks.

You might think about going to a local junk yard and trying it there first, if you can find a max with wood trim. That way, you will have done it once before you try it on your new car.

yea, true. but you must take off the trim around the shifter, it pops up and out. you do that to get to the screws that hold the change holder, after that you can get to the screws on the bottom of the main radio trim piece. just take your time and you should be ok

you will not ruin the trim, i have done the same thing before. first remove trim around shifter by putting a flat screwdriver a in between edge and prying up gently, then turn on car so you could move shifter to N so you could remove plastic, set E-brake! next unscrew ash tray 1 screw, then pull it out. then remove the 2 screws holding radio panel. gently lift up to create a space by temp. control, then lift and pull out temp.control with top airvent - attached. remove the to 2 screws. replace radio without stripping screws very important.
