Facing the sub towards the seats or towards the tail lights?
#7
Just tried facing the subs towards the seat and man, does it sound bad. Not only does it loose a lot of bass but sounds dampened. Well, I'm going to stick with the subs facing away from the seats, sound a lot better.
My next step is to look for a good ported box for the 12" Solo-Barics.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

with the sub facing away you have reflected sound coming into play. with the front you have nothing adding to the wave, just direct output. try facing the sub up into the rear deck (Will load the woofer as well adn give some output difference) then angle toward the shock towers.
fosgate you have to figure that in doing forward usually the woofers are plated in and secured forcing the air forward. theres a good write up in last monts ca&e

I was thinking about putting a couple 12's in a bandpass box facing into the drivers compartment with the seats down would I get more bass from a bandpass box facing into the drivers conpartment or just have a regular box and the subs face back?

idealy, you want all of your woofers facing the trunk lid. for optimum response, they should be placed from 12" - 18" away from the lid. i keep mine facing further away becuase my box is much bigger than yours, and i still want to be able to get to my spare if i need to. seeing as yours is much smaller, i would suggest you mabye try placing it on the passanger side of the trunk, about 12" away from the trunklid. i would imagine having it fire in the corner would give you as much deflection as you could achieve. as far as getting a bandpass box, i wouldnt recomend it to begin with, but it shouldnt matter what way you face the woofers. in a bandpass, the speakers are fired into a plexi-glass encloser (typically), and the actual sound you hear comes from the ports on the top of the box. there are many different types, and variations of enclosures, but unless your not planning on spending a few thousand dollars into your stereo system, i would suggest you just stay with a regular sealed, or ported enclosure.
just to add, you dont want to hear the music coming directly from the speakers. you want to hear the bass after it has been deflected off another part of the car. thats why it didnt sound good when you had it facing the seats. if you want to hear about a few other options as far as enclosures, i can tell you about a few variations that you might like.

I have a single 15 in a ported box and just for fun I moved it around so that the woofer and port was firing in different directions. I normally have it firing upward toward the back dash/top of the trunklid. I moved it so that it fired towards the rear and towards the front and I couldn't tell a difference in the sound either time. I put it back how it was in the first place.

I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you guys know how it sounds.im saying to try facing the woofer up firing into the rear deck. then move the box still firing up to the BACK of the trunk near the opening. then put it all the way back in the trunk and fire it sideways at the shock tower. In my stratus the cleanest hitting with the 3 tens was with the box at the trunk opening firing into the trunk lid. with the six tens it was far forward, when i settled on four 12s we fired up and angled 151.3 dbs never lie playing with placement will get what you want
Nah, I'd rather leave the seats up. It's too much trouble to put it down and put them back up after I park. Plus, I don't want people knowing that I have a system in the car. Btw, what does spl and sq stand for?
Thanks!

Surprisingly, it did sound bad. I guess cause it was facing the seats and the soundwaves have nowhere to travel.Roger that

if the woofers are in a ported enclosure and all you are looking at PURE OUTPUT then this is so. If looking for a standard street system fire it to the rear. firing forward opens the can of worms that contains
-PORT NOISE
-Mechanical Noise
two things that are easily masked by not directly facing the woofer into the compartment... i think...

true, but if you notice it says opens the can of worms. there are all kinds of tricks around that such as rolled flanges if it is a cardboard tube port, or you can router the edges of the port round, etc, so there are ways around it if he does experience it, that is still a possibile problem.

Hey guys! Thanks for the advice on going with the ported enclosure, it sounds so... much better. Now this is the sound that I was looking for!
Check out the pics. Too bad the box is too big for me to fit it closer to the seats. The factory sub is too low for the new box to fit snuggly in the back but who cares, it sounds GREAT!!!
Thanks again guys!
