6.5's will work in both doors with a little work to get them secured.

There are 2 screws and 5 or 6 clips that hold the door panel (skin) in. 1 screw is under the door handle and the other is behind a round cover up toward the side view mirror. Next, pop out the control panel and disconnect, then pop off the plastic rim around the door release handle. Both will take a little finesse with a screwdriver. Then reach under the bottom part of the door skin and find the opening to put your fingers into and pull out to release the clips around the bottom half of the panel. Then just push up toward the window and the skin comes out of the window channel and you're done. Good luck.

i've been thinking about new speakers, but not a new head unit. is it worth it to get aftermarket speakers with the stock head unit? will the sound be any different?

Good question....can someone speak up in here that has replcaed speakers (Bose System) but left the original HU in?

ALSO...in reply to Superpaul33...I replaced all four speakers in my GXE and bought everything from Crutchfield. The mounting plates that they give you do not fit exactly right. They are a generic piece that is CLOSE, but still has to be jerry rigged to make fit.

SO...question to all....Does anyone (store / shop) sell any better mounting brackets than the ones that come from Crutchfield?

THANKS!

I've seen someone make spacer templates out of plywood based upon tracing the old speaker shells. I haven't seen brackets or spacers provided by the speaker manufacturers. I personally just drilled holes in the door shell and used 1/2 inch spacers cut from an old hose I found in a junk yard.

It is definitely worth it to upgrade your speakers and keep your stock head unit. Stock speakers are crap.

Replaced stock speakers

I replaced the stock speakers with separate woofer/tweeter speakers in the front (Boston Acoustics) and a set of co-ax speakers in the back (also Bostons). I left the stock HU in, but it's the regular kind - no Bose.

The front speaker combo sounds great. 1000% better than stock. But the back speakers can hardly even be heard. It cost me $500 to do it, and I think it's worth it.

ok for the fronts, i used the old white plastic mount, but i cut of the backing of it because my infinitys kappas were like at least 2 in deeper......just take a utility knife and chop that part off, use stock screws to make it fit, the rears i used 6.5" with the mounts that came with the speakers, positioned the holes and then drilled small holes and then screwed the mount and speakers in, go with 6.5 in back, it is worth it if you have subs, evens out the mids and highs for the people in back. hope that helps pm me if you have any other questions.
