New HU, old system

Ok im sure this has come up like a billion times, no i dont have search capabilities, yes i looked in the FAQ. I am having sever HU problems. Everytime i turn it on its fine, but often when i go to change a cd, the HU locks up, no radio, no eject, it just shuts off and no buttons work, i can reset the Hu by disconnecting and reconnecting the harness and then its back to normal, but i dont feel like doing it every single time it happens, which is almost everytime i drive. The cds are normal .wavs, so it isnt misread data causing it to mess up, Nowi read that i can buy a new HU, and us a PAC harness? fill me in on how it works, and the amp is external and under the HU console correct? whats the quality like with this PAC thing, is it worth it? I need to do this as economical as poissible, im a SQ freak, so its either i needa deal with this or have my HU repaired at the same time i have my front window fixed.

thanx

The amps are located at each speaker, not under the HU. You can replace it with a new HU very easily and 'adaptors' are Not needed.
