thanks Manny and Chris. thats the exact works i used to describe it... classy. its just furniture wood. me and kevin are going over to CC in 30 min to make an amprack. i also need ideas for future covering of the sub enclosure and amp rack. kevin suggested like navy blue CF look vinyl for the box and amp rack. id like to stay away from carpet because thats boring and im all about originality.

edit: also 2 da max: it smokes the shivas like a black n mild. is that gangsta enough for you? granted the shivas were restricted in a sealed box but the difference is more than night and day. i cant even turn it up because my rear deck sounds like its going to snap in half. that may be due to my hack job of putting it back on once i foamed it up.

well me and kevin finished the amp rack, looks good. i was playing with some test tones... 20hz is alot of fun to watch even with the SSF on. this sub doesnt move alot but ill make a video soon.

 

it still moves below the SSF set mark?

 

yeah i mean 24db slope doesnt mean no output. when going below tuning excursion goes way up thus you have a SSF. but subtracting 24db from over 120 is still audible...er enough to shake things at 20hz.

 

I vote for staining it. Fake CF is If you have scraps of wood left over you can try different stains and dyes till you find one you like. Personally I like the water based dyes, they have some really cool colors. You can also buy some iron on edge banding to cover up the end grain. Top it all off with a good coat of polyurethane and you will be set.

thanks for the tips. my original plan was to stain it also. im going to explore some ideas with what to do with it but for now i just like the output from the box.

stain the wood with a finish, you know change the color shades

 

i say go ahead and enjoy the box some more first. try to do everything at once when you guys put in the amp rack.

 

amp rack is done, all natural is how my trunk is gonna look for awhile.

thanks man! i guess im old school and i like the look of natural wood. my roomate makes fun of it all the time and claims wood is for furniture but i enjoy it and thats all that matters.

 

Why not just go with a clear gloss or satin polyurethane. It will help protect it from the rain and looks awesome on light woods like Maple and Birch. Just cover up that ugly end grain with this: Edging

i think so, i left my old sealed box outside and damn did that thing soak up the rain.

 

Plywood is much better than MDF as far as swelling and falling apart, but it can still spot and stain. I would definately put a protective coat on it. That way if something does spill on it you can just wipe it off.

 

in woodshop, I use to stain the wood (finally remember what that meant) and then used wood wax so it has a very subtle shine, not like lacquer which gives it very high shine.
