TEST FIT

i started my fiberglass box today.

i got the first layer/shell layer done.

Im just wondering how many coats of the mat do i have to put to make sure this thing will be strong. 4-5?

Also, i got a few bubbles in the fiberglass, the spot is still strong but i can see air pockets, can i just cover these up or did i screw up??

o ya i am putting the box in the left rear corner of the trunk and im gona be pushing 1 12"

2 Layers, followed by a layer of body filler. Sand down the body filler ($15, Advance) using a filler knife ($1.50, Advance) and 200-grit paper. Then add a final layer of mix that consists of even amounts resin and body filler mixed together - this will give you a pourable mixture that is easy to sand. If you go with just fiberglass it is going to take longer and not give as strong a final product. For the extra $20 it's 110% worth it.

Unfortunatley, yes. To remove the air bubbles, pop them out with your brush - this process is called "stippling". As far as the existing bubble are concerned, just sand that part down...it's not going to go away if the resin has cured.

Good luck!

Just as an additional note, spot filling should be done with a glazing putty, not body filler. The Blue Acryl by 3M is a good choice as it does not require any type of activator.

How many layers depends on the thickness of the mat and resin, as long as it is 1/4" or more you are good. 1/4" mat w/ resin is equivient to 3/4 mdf. They sure do make it look easy on them how to videos though.

Body filler is used on the outside of the box in order to get a smooth look/finish. It's also easier to sand than fiberglass. Because of this, it is recommended to fiberglass from the inside of the box rather than the outside but that is sometimes not possible. Since this area will be covered up by the corner, you do not need to use body filler here. However, if you are **** like me and feel that everything has to be perfect regardless of whether or not anyone can see it then go ahead with the body filler. As with everthing, have fun and post those pics when you get the time.

From the looks of it, you will now need to mount the speaker baffle and wrap the enclosure in polar fleece...then follow the steps I detailed.
