I have ask Matt this question but I think he's busy and have not had the chance to reply. I have a 3rd Gen and I'm in the process of installing BMW headlights. I want the new headlights (9005 lows and 9006 highs) to both come on when I choose high beam and only low beams for lows. The old headlights have three wires going to it (ground, high, low, I guess). How would I go about rewiring this so that I can do what I want the BMW headlights to do. Matt mentioned something about relays also but I don't know anything about electricity but I can read a schematic. Please help!
Thanks

i have that problem solved...
but no BMW headlights to go with it.
I had an extra combination headlight switch
and modified it so the low beams wouldnt turn
off with highs.

I'll see if i can take the switch apart tonite
and take some pix for you of how I did it.
It's not quite a wiring mod.. more like a
mechanical mod. I had to take the headlight combo
switch apart and file some stuff down...

Alright..

I'm not a master at this stuff so I'll
try to explain myself the best way I can.
There are a few ways you can make the BMW
lights do what you want them to do, but I'm
going to explain 2 ways I would probably do it.

1st-Using Relays
As you see in the pix,
there are 3 wires coming from the old
headlights:
High beam (red in the pix)
Low beam (green in the pix)
Ground (black in the pix)

Those aren't the real colors of the wires,
just the colors i used to represent them.
I also have an external 12v wire, most likely
connected to the battery or any other constant
12v source, shown by the yellow wire.

The gray box in the pix is the relay.

So here's how to do it:
-splice a wire into the high beam wire
and connect it to pin 86 of the relay
-splice a wire into the low beam wire
and connect it to pin 87 of the relay
-connect 12v constant power to pin 30
on the relay (remember to fuse it!!)
-splice a wire into the ground wire and
connect it to pin 85 of the relay
-connect ground to both the 9005/9006
bulbs and you should be done

This should be done for both passenger and driver side
lights.

2nd-The way of the Yak
-Take out the headlight combination switch
and unscrew the 2 screws on the back of it.
-Pry out the entire white piece in the back
with a small screwdriver. Remember, the headlight
connector is attached to it.
-Your combo switch should now look like the one in the pix.
-Take out the white flat piece that i circled.
-Look at it and you should see a few dips in it.
-If you see my pix, the white piece should look like that.
The grayed out areas are the 2 bumps that you want to
file down.
-File the 2 bumps until they're flat and even with the dip.
-Put the whole sucker together again and you're done.

Hope this helps. Any questions, just let me know.
