HELP! Can't remove headunit from frame...(pics inside)

I am having the worst f-ing luck in the world with removing my OEM headunit. The screws highlighted in red WILL NOT screw a damn's worth. I've put every ounce of strength into it, but it's no use. I've soaked the screws in some WD-40...nothing. WTF is the problem!? This is, literally, driving me nuts. I've posted this here and in the audio forum, because I need as many replies as possible...otherwise, I'm putting everything back together and just saying f*ck it. I just can't get the OEM out of the frame. =(

These are the culprits:

Get a ratchet with a long handle and turn the screws...the longer the handle, the more torque you will have. Have 1 person hold the ratchet in-line with the screw, then turn the ratchet...it this does not work at firts, insert a hollow pipe around the ratchet body giving you a longer ratchet...the longer the handle the more torque you will have.

That is how I did it.

Work smarter, not harder dude...I PROMISE...this will work!!!!!!

Unless he is using a hammer drill or a drill press, he is going to simply wind up stripping the screws...at which opint, he's fu<ked

I got em out. Went to my mechanics and the two of them managed to screw them out. Now I'm faced with a new f*cking problem...CD Error FO. The headunit won't open up to take in a CD.

No clue. I'm putting the OEM back in. The 6-disc is defective, the CD bay doesn't open up.

I realize it's too late to help you, but if it will help others...

I used a screw driver and attached a pair of vice grips to the handle to use as leverage. Then I put the stereo on its side and used ALL of my weight on top of the screw driver to keep it from slipping out and stripping the screw heads and used the vice grip handle to turn. It worked really well.

The Nissan tech who replaced my defective BOSE HU said the screws were a ***** to remove and the hardest part of the job. So even Nissan stealerships have problems.

easiest way is to use a brand new screwdriver and attempt the removal on carpet so nothing turns. You gotta put all your weight into the screws, but they will break free. Once stripped however, no amount of weight will get them out, so time for the drill.

I have an old Black and Decker Versa Pack screw driver. This old thing is great. Even if the batteries are worn down, the thing has a big handle that allowed me to get a good grip on it and break the screws loose. When ever I have a hard time taking a screw off, I go and get this, it has not failed me yet .

That's why I like my impact driver. It's like $28 at Sears. You just use a normal 3/8" drive phillips head socket and a hammer. Works great on any stubborn screw or bolt.

When I took mine out I ended up stripping a couple of them. Those things are in there tight, but the metal is a little soft which makes it easy to strip them. The easiest way I found to remove the stipped ones was to take a dremel and put a notch in the screw head. Then you can put a huge flat blade screwdriver in there and they come out pretty easy. I don't know why Nissan torqued them so hard, but if they are going to do that they really should use bolts...not philips head screws.

They probably have Loc-tite on them. That stuff works great... but a pain in the butt when you try pulling the screws back out.

I expected better from you. And I have a feeling the fact there's too many mods to list, is because you're dreaming of all them.

I'm sure the only reason they made them that difficult was to discourage people like us from taking the stereo out on our own. That way they can charge you bazillion dollars to fix it for you!

Had the same problem with two of the screws and before I finally gave up, I used my dremel to cut two slots so that I could use my big flat head screwdriver. Worked like a charm, but of course after an hour of bangin my head against the wall trying to figure out what to do.

most of the time if you actually try to tighten it a bit more it breaks the "gatorgrip" like hold on the screw. Ive done this to 3 out of the 4 maxes in my family.

if that didnt work i got the best fitting bit, vice grips, and a family member to apply most pressure from the top while i hit the vicegrips holding the bit

I drilled mine

The case on the stereo is very thin, so as soon as I drilled through the head, the theaded part fell right through into the stereo case. Then just open the case and retrieve the screws.http://forums.maxima.org/newreply.ph...e=1&p=3922403#

I used a drill. Broke 3 bits (the the tips literarly broke off), but finally I managed to find a strong enough bit to unscrew them. I had to however put all my weight on when screwing them out with the drill. If you don't, you will strip off the screw.

You're kidding right? You bumped a 2 year old thread for no useful information whatsoever.

seriously. the replies in this thread are mindboggling.

an impact driver and a proper bit for this screw would've make this very easy.
