My recently purchased (pre-owned) 2001 GXE did not come with a remote.

Should I:

1. Order a remote from Nissan, and have it programmed by my local dealer (assuming this is all possible)

or

2. Have an aftermarket (crimestopper) remote/alarm system installed, which will give me some extras (the alarm, trunk pop and gas tank opener), but will cost me $220.

What type of setups do you all have?

Thanks

One more request:
How does the factory remote look? Do you get any style points with it? Do you have any pictures you can provide?

Thanks

I assume that all 2001 Maximas have keyless entry system (If you have a security light at dash where the clock is). It features door lock/unlock, trunk release, and panic feature). You can add a alarm onto that and it makes a good system.

Don't bother to buy a remote from a dealer, I have been quoted $100+ from them. You should be able to find one off ebay from less than $50, or even much less than that. Sometime the seller will even give you programming instructions, so you can do it yourself. It's not too difficult.

In terms of how it looks... IMHO most factory remotes look very nice, and Nissan's is no exception.

Hope this helps.

One more thing

If u want to go factory, I was at the dealer the other day, and they said that nissan now has a shock sensor that they can add to they Keyless entry. I was quoted 120 to add it on. And on ebay, the factory remotes go for 10-15 dollars.

Here is a link to a pixelated pic

Thanks for the good advice guys...
I decided on going with the factory remote for now, and I'll look into the shock sensor upgrade.

Thanks for the link cwally, I won the auction. Those are sweet wheels on your ride!

How do you program the remote? Do you need to go back to the dealer and have them do it, or can you do it yourself?

Thanks

From what I understand, you have to go back to the dealer to get it programmed.

I just recieved my remote today, which came with a set of instructions... I'll try programming it today, assuming it works, I'll post the instructions on this board later.

I found some info on how to program the 4th gen keyless entry:

http://web2.airmail.net/scutchen/max...nce.htm#Remote

Does this look like what they have in your instructions?

Looks like we found the same instructions, but from different places....

I'll paste them here:

Replacing Remote Controller or Multi-Remote Control Unit (LCU05)

Enter the identity (ID) code manually when:

remote controller or multi-remote control unit LCU05 is replaced.
an additional remote controller is activated.
ID Code Entry Procedure

To enter the ID code, follow this procedure.

Entering "Setting mode":
(1) Close and lock all doors.

(2) Insert and remove the key from the ignition more than six times within 10 seconds. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.) At this time, the original ID codes are eliminated.

ID code entry:
(3) Turn ignition key to "ACC" position.

(4) Push lock button on the new remote controller once (for example, if door is locked using the remote controller during this ID code entry enable state, a new ID code can be entered). At this time, the new ID code is entered. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.)

Additional ID code entry
(5) If you need to activate additional remote controllers, unlock the driver's door, then lock again with door lock ****.

(6) Push lock button on the additional new remote controller once.

(7) This ID code entry enable state and setting mode remain until the driver's door is opened.

NOTE
If you need to activate more than two additional new remote controllers, repeat the procedure "Additional ID code entry" for each new remote controller.
If the same ID code that exists in the memory is input, the hazard warning lamps will flash twice but the entry will be ignored.
Entry of maximum four ID codes is allowed and any attempt to enter more will be ignored.
Any ID codes entered after termination of the "setting mode" will not be accepted. Additionally remote control signals will be inhibited when an ID code has not been entered during the "setting" mode.
