Slickrick got metered today!

so i went to an spl competition that was sanctioned by IASCA today in gainesville. i told myself I'd never do an spl competition and my system was NEVER built for even the idea of going to one. anyway, ill attach a pic of my score. overall I'm ok with it. i came in 5th place out of 9. everyone in my class was running either more subs/more power than me in much smaller cars b ut my Ava 15 more than held its own. once i remove and redo my amp rack I'm sure to gain a DB and be in the 140's. the Mic was a term pro...sensor was attached to the winshield as per a normal competition along with windows up. all in all i had a great time and I'm happy my single sub setup can do what it did.

p.s. special props to Shawn Fleming of team PSI!!!!

edit: 139.3 was at 45hz.

I'm sure there are competitions...or just go to a shop and see if they have a mic. Chris the meter is an "term pro" but when i spoke to someone its an audiocontrol but slightly different. he said expect it to be around 8-9db higher than a TL...they had a TL there but if i went on it i would have been sad. by going today it really gave me an appreciation of how loud systems are in relation to mine based on scores.

It's a very respectable score. Especially in a trunk car. Let alone w/ only 600watts. Great job I say!! All the big dogs are using the TL and they still hit high 160 to mid 170's. I wouldn't go near a meter. Afraid if I do I will spend more money. It really does give you a great appreciation for how loud people have gotten thier rides.

thanks for the compliments guys. chris to be honest our systems and cars are not even close to being setup as spl cars but its nice our systems get loud and sound great doing it. i got such nice compliments from a guy who hit 152 on the tl with w RE 18's about how great my sub sounded. he even said "damn it shakes me all over too". i know that means nothing, but form a guy who hits 152 on the tl thats something nice to hear. with my minute knowledge on spl id say you can easily hit close to 148-150 on the mic i was on... and you would have won my division!

edit: like ive stated... TERM PRO mic. its not the TL mic. although the tl mic was there. only people who competed in "db drag" used that mic. but id say 70% of cars used the term pro mic which is an audiocontrol mic or some version of it. so typically subtract 8-10 db and you can get idea of a TL score.

Nice... I'll send some pointers if you want to SPL drag... and keep SQ. I've gotten really good at. Heck, I did good using a pure SQ setup in a compeition. 147.6 with a TERM PRO. Of course, I have a truck still not bad.

son i have no clue what you are talking to... and don't you EVER ask me what kind of dbs your kicker setup could have done. moreover, don't mention that you wanna hit 300 dbs.

TERM PRO??? I'm not a engineer for sound devices... I just install & tune setups It's a lower grade mic than the TLs, that's all I can remember. I never really looked into the mics that much.

I guess there's just some way they designed the TLs that it picks up better.

tl is the tl because it takes the average of the 3 highest frequencies at the highest spl. i learned that today. i think the termpro is just similar to an audio control and that was what i was told.

This is the setup I had when I hit that 147.6

The amp poking up over there is my old Logic 620. I sold that long before the compeitition.

This is the amp I used... in this picture it's still wired for the SQ, which I used during the compeitition. I later went bridged when I installed the HUGE vented box I have now.

Its the same **** as Rockford and Rockwood. One is good, one isnt and copies the name. One has accurate ratings, one says their amps put out 4000 watts.

term pro... is the brand mic that is used.. the new one is harder it hit high scores on..

the audiocontrol on the other hand is more sensetive or something and its easier to get good scores..

someone correct me if im wrong

I'm thinking I could break the 150s with the setup I have now. It hits a lot harder and louder than my old one.

The one I'm fixing to have done to my truck... I'm not too sure, it's going to be vented, but the box area will probably end up being smaller. I shall just have to see.

right but the 1st thing you learn about spl is not how loud it is at low frequencies...although shawns XXX 15's hit 147.8 at 33hz on the TL! almost every guy ran tones higher than me (between 50-70hz) because they all built boxes for competition. id say maybe 5 out of the roughly 20 cars competing could be daily drivers.

I'm not running a full 500 watts either... and I'll rattle the dashs' of cars next to me with my windows down... I crank it up, and you'll just want to from the pressure.

I was talking with a competitor at SBN who happened to be the Regional champion in his division, he was running a pair of Kicker Solo-X 12's in a Mountaineer. He told me that the meters are very different. There are basically two brands. AC and TL. The AC mic as well as the TL can be run using the Term Pro software. It is Very hard to get a solid score on the new TL. And yes the AC will typically read anywhere from 6-8db lower than a TL mic. The TL is also a much better gauge of actual SPL than the AC. It has been designed specifically for the higher ranges of SPL. I related it too a vehicles speedometer that has a higher degree of inaccuracy the higher the speed. Not sure if that is a good analogy though. BTW, that guy was hitting a 152-154db with a box that was below the window line and just a pair of 12's. Sick I say. This conversation happened at 3AM. I hope I didn't mix any of the facts.

Oh and one more thing. SPL setups are not going to be the same in that the Street Beat or daily drivers may sound louder but almost never get good #'s in comparison. I had, in my 3rd gen, 3 Kicker solo 12's that wound pop out my sunroof. People egged me on to get it metered b/c it sounded louder than many of the other people that were going to compete. I caved. When I closed my car up and lined up against a guy with 2 old Sony 12's, no clue what model they were grey in cone color though, And he put down a 141 and I put down a 133. I spent 3K. He spent less than 1K. I would shake his car apart while he was in front of me. But he put up much higher #'s. Anyway the point, Just b/c you think your car is loud, doesn't mean the meter will be nice and give you a good score.
