Question about changing Bose HU

I went to that link, then went to the guy's home page, and he had all new speakers. On the question of whether you can simply substitute a new HU and keep the Bose speakers... I've been to four different car stereo shops, and I keep getting different answers to that question. Circuit City looked at the car and said they could put a new HU in, no problems. They do it all the time with these Bose systems. Best Buy said No Way. A high end shop said they always had to replace the whole system with the Infiniti Bose systems.
The most reliable info seems to be that you have to get an adapter unit, like the ROEM-NSSN thing at www.affsave.com, specifically designed to convert standard HU outputs, wattages, and voltage to Bose inputs, wattage, and voltage.

I decided to go with the high end shop. They sounded like they knew what they were talking about and said they line in some resistors to make the Kenwood HU I bought compatible with the existing Bose speakers. Total damage after install should be about $350. (HU was $200.) They said my '96 Infiniti Bose system was old school easy compared to some of the high end Benz systems they have to trick out. Install is tomorrow.

Im not fond of using this term but, RAPE. I had co-worker connect my head unit directly to the bose speakers (with no AOEM-NIS2) adapter for temporary music until the rest of my system was fully installed. The head unit made a significant difference in the bose speakers (especially the hi's) but I replaced those with 6.5 CDT coaxials / midrange drivers. I paid 45 dollars for my install.
A word of advice though, Get rid of the bose system altogether. The speakers are horrible, and most likely your dust caps have begun to come off. The bose amplifier creates horrible sound that "scratches" when your hi's get too high for the bose amps. For the price you'll pay for installation at that shop, you could get pair of CDT components from thezeb.com (or for a little more talk to pearl for rainbow, ect), grab some diagrams, and do it yourself. I watched my co-worker install my system from beginning to end, and being a person who's never modified anything on a vehicle, Id say it is a piece of cake.

The extra charges included a Metra adapter harness, an antenna adapter, and a premium pocket.

They used the Metra 70-7550, which is what they had in stock. There was a little electrical interference from the engine and even some clicks and pops when the CD would change tracks, so I took it back in immediately and they fixed that at no charge. (Did they forget to ground it?)
The labor and parts was just under $150. That does seem high when the big stores do free installation, but I just wanted somebody local who appeared to really know what they were talking about.
