Strange radio problem?

The stereo in my '84 maxima wagon won't turn off? The "power" button does nothing, and therefore the tape deck below it dosn't work right, as the deck is supposed to turn the radio off so you can play the tape thru the radio and still use the radio controls, volume, fader, etc. I am assuming the "power" button is only operating a relay, and the relay is probably whats bad.
I really want to keep the car as original as possible, so suggestions about installing a KILLER 500 watt sound blaster won't be welcomed!
Anyone have an easy answer?
Thanks in advance, Earl

hard to tell, it could be a few things. bad relay, loose soldered connection, button just finally gave If you really want to keep it stock that bad, you could take it out and have it repaired.

But you can find some radios today that aren't that flashy.

I've had the radio out, and there are 2 relays on a removable board that the wireing goes to both the power botton, and the deck wireing, and the botton itself checks ok with a meter, so I'm assuming it's one or both of the relays????
Earl
P.S. they are both Hatachi units, and the diagram is available.

radio

Thanks guys, I pulled the radio again, after finding a replacement at a local wrecking yard. Turned out the yard one is a Clarion, that dosn't play am/fm, so none of the guts are exchangable, but I ohmed out the power switch and found a difference, so I re-soldered the connections on the board, and all is well....
It now works as new, and I have a spare that don't play am/fm, but the tape player works fine thru it????? Earl
