Quick Response Needed: Best place to buy wiring...

Hey guys,

I finally decided to upgrade my 4 guage to 1/0 guage. I have a few questions though.

Where is the best place to buy this wire? I want to do it today, so I need a store name, not ebay or anything.

Also, I currently have my grounds going through a dist. block. Would it be better to run a separate ground from each amp to the grounding point? If I run 1/0 power wire to a dist. block and 4 awg from that dist. block to each amp, can I just run a 4 awg from each amp to the grounding point?

Thanks for the help.

Get ahold of Don. I see your not very far away from him. That is where I would start. I will also recommend Stinger. I have recently upgraded to 0ga and wonder why I didn't do it that way in the begining.

Ground distribution blocks only create more resistance for each individual ground wire, so grounding each amp to a single grounding point will do the same thing. Yes you should be fine with a 4 gauge ground for each amp if you are running 4 gauge power from the dist block.

Did you end up doing this already today? Im a Stinger fan also, so Id recommend their stuff if you havent already done it.

^^

Thanks guys. No, I didn't wind up doing it today because I didn't realize how hard 1/0 guage cable is to find for a reasonable price. I'm going to contact Don and maybe try to get this stuff for next weekend. Just did my oil today instead.

use Knuceptz(sp). Sorry I suck at spelling but do a search for KNu wiring and it should appear. Its very resonable and isnt like other companies that claim 0 gauge and are like 2. I would highly recommend them.

Not sure about the strand count on the Knuconcept stuff. I can only speak on what a quality wire the Stinger Expert is. The black ground wire in that series is awesome and flexes like a wet noodle for routing ease. Def see what Don can do for you though.

Sounds like a good product. If I hadn't had such a good experience with the Stinger product line, I would give them a try. Thanks for the information.

Yeah, I checked out knukonceptz.com, but is that the only place you can buy it from? Seems like pretty good stuff for a reasonable price.

Thanks.

2 places come to mind: Home Depot/Lowe's and a welding shop.

All the fuss about strand count is bogus, power wire is just wire.

I don't really want to argue with you about this. All wire is not created equal. The only things that welding wire and say the Stinger Expert Series wire is that they will both carry a current and the actual thickness of the wire. The similarities stop there.

Wow, what a convincing point you have there.

Well, unlike you, I will go ahead and support my position with some sourced facts:

"As previously mentioned, the skin effect is where alternating current tends to avoid travel through the center of a solid conductor, limiting itself to conduction near the surface. This effectively limits the cross-sectional conductor area available to carry alternating electron flow, increasing the resistance of that conductor above what it would normally be for direct current" ( http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/chpt_3/6.html ).

"When wire (specifically, solid copper conductors as are used for transformers) is used to carry DC current, the entire cross sectional area of copper carries the current equally. When wire is used for AC current, the current is carried differently. At low frequencies, the current flow is not significantly affected by the skin effect. As you get into the higher frequencies (as those used to drive a transformer in a switch mode power supply), the current flow is carried disproportionately by the outer area of the copper wire (especially for large single solid conductors). This is called the skin effect" ( http://www.bcae1.com/trnsfrmr.htm ).

Well, in case you do not wish to read the articles - this is what they add up to: Strand count in car-audio wiring is only worth paying extra for if you wish to have very flexible wire. Also, the "skin effect" which people often refer to in support of purchasing the very expensive power wiring with higher strand counts is very real... however, it occurs in AC systems... our cars are DC and do not see this effect.

I'm sorry if I am sounding rude... but why should ANYBODY waste their money.

I disagree, if you go power a Power Acoustik 2 gauge kit it looks and feels more like 4 gauge. If you compare it to Streetwires 2 gauge you can feel a difference, you can prove as much as you like but from personal experience I'll never believe all wire is the exact same. This is personal experience, not something written by someone so its up to you to decide what you guys believe in.

yeah, my 4 gauge and my friend's 4 gauge isn't the same. i have more copper than him...but the overall diameter of the wire is the same. his insulation is thicker than mine.
