SPL170 in IB?

SPL170 in IB?
Think a Soundstream SPL 170 would make a good IB sub? Something tells me it would sound better IB than it ever could in a box (much like the SPL Mule from yesteryear that I can't find anywhere) ...

As a general guideline, Qts of 0.4 or below indicates a transducer well suited to a vented enclosure. Qts between 0.4 and 0.7 indicates suitability for a sealed enclosure. Qts of 0.7 or above indicates suitability for free-air or infinite baffle applications. However, there are exceptions.
My mids have low qts of .29 yet they fare well IB in our rather large doors- but these are used for mids (60hz and up), the capability of hitting the lower frequencies is whats affected. If choosing a sub these are the areas you want best performing, you cannot sacrifice.

Looks like a def maybe. I never knew that about the Qts. They look awesome. I have always been a Soundstream fan. Joel, your 4th gen had Infinities in it right? Were they IB? I was very impressed with the clarity in your last car. Are you hell bent on IB?

Hell bent? Nah. I just keep going back to it because the two cars at the top of my list that I ever heard were both IB and both built by the same guy. He was meticulous in sealing off the trunk from the cabin and always got GREAT bass response for all kinds of music.
Besides ... it will save me some trunk space and sound great at the same time ... where's the down side again?

I love me me some Soundstream subs. Mine are discontinued, yet I made every effort to find me a second one. When you like something....
For SPL friendhasmax had a 10" Tarantula that was awesome ported, been a big fan of the older Exacts for SQ too.
Big Ham by all means if you feel like it could work, best way to find out is by giving it a shot- take a look at their new Picasso subs, their specs look a lil better suited for IB.

I know I could never get my desired output from an IB enclosure though. So that option was out for me. I still can't wait to see what you have planned. I get all tingly just thinking about those 3 ways.
The guy I'm bragging about had 2 Soundstream Mules (12") in forward firing IB with the trunk completely sealed. These things were VERY loud and VERY clear and accurate. Each one had a Soundstream Class A 6.0 on it. I'm desperately trying to find these subs, but they seem to have disappeared. I see Infinity Beta's more than Mules ...

OH goody, i just love responding to this! 5 yrs. ago i worked on building an A-PERIODIC sub system. you guys heard of USD AUDIO AP MATS right? well, you had to have a net internal vol. of a wee .33 cu.ft. not an easy task for a pair my 15" SOUNDSTREAM SPL160's! i had to laminate 9 sheets of 3/4" MDF. then added rectangular frames for the mats which i dadoed the perimeter of these so they could sink into the box an inch. this system was a 120 pounds! unfortunately it didn't sound right so i simply removed the mats and they kick butt! i'm a SQ fan and the transient attack from these cones is awesome. i use a 36dB slope@20Hz via a pioneer DEQ-P9 DSP as a subsonic filter w/a lowpass of 63Hz, also at 36dB slope. a lowpass freq. that low doesn't provide the kind of major output you could get w/a freq. like 80Hz but hey, i said i like SQ and to maintain that "upfront bass" effect it has to stay low. that's why i installed 10" infinity kappa perfects in kick panel enclosures, i built. anyway, i digress, about the mats not sounding very good. i know that an absolutely isolated trunk volume separate from the cabin was paramount. and i had taken measures to insure this. but alas the current setup i have now is literally permanent cause i have brackets, that hold the baffle in place, welded to the trunk floor and the underside of the package shelf. if the specs are similar to your newer 170's you might really dig the IB thing. i know i do!

gentleman, first, i apolagize for taking this long to respond. second, as i understand it, being a newb, i can post but can not include any type of attachments. lastly, being a loner, i've not once showed my setup to anyone that was sincerely interested in my system. therefore, offering several pics for those that care to view would be pretty cool. especially because it would be the first time i've ever uploaded anything. herein lies the real problem..........i don't own a stinking camera! no kidding, i'm not just saying that 'cause it's all a lie. in fact, i'll even admit that tou wouldn't be exceptionally impressed. my guess is, you're expecting my ride to be all clean and polished up. like all the rides i've seen thus far on this website. i can say this though, my car isn't in a wrecked state of any kind, it just does'nt have any aftermarket upgrades-performance/aethetic(sp?) or otherwise. i'm guess i'm telling you this so it does'nt sound like i'm only "whoring" it up. all can tell you is, what is installed is rock solid and 99% self installed, including the remote-start clifford alarm w/window roll-up modules and door-lock/unlock relays. i hired someone else to weld-up the floating amp-rack that i fabricated out of 3/4" angle aluminum. i know, talk is pretty cheap on this forum so if i ever borrow someone's camera, i'll learn how to post pics. but i don't expect anyone to get to excited, really.

If you have existing pictures, get them scanned and email them to me (I will provide my email address when you have pics) and I can host them for you. Not that you're looking for acceptance, but no one here is going to believe you without pics.
I'd personally love to see your setup. Doesn't matter how "clean", as we can appreciate speaker placement and quality equipment.
