Avic D1 N2 Lockout Bypass Instructions
Found this on rec.car.audio and the 12volt forums.. Haven't tried it myself yet. Anyone know if it works?

Hope this is OK to make a clean post of this, but alot of people are asking about this and the multi-page threads are not so clear. It contains some updated information from the original rec.audio.car post, as well.
Below are instructions on how to bypass the lockouts on the Pioneer AVIC-N2 and AVIC-D1. It is real simple, and does not require any complex switches or anything. We figure these are service or testing modes, and were not intended to become public. Our Pioneer guy claims to not know anything about it, but who knows, that may just be a line.
This bypass will do three things:
1. Makes all nav functions available while driving (just like they should be)
2. Make video playback available while driving
3. No more parking brake warning box!!!
AVIC-N2 lockout bypass: Underneath the MAIN unit (not the hideaway) is a small silver sticker, peel this back. There are two contacts with the label "R197". Drop a bit of solder between these to connect them. Also, you must ground the Parking Brake wire.
AVIC-D1 lockout bypass: Find an extra Pioneer wire harness, and pull one of the wires out. Or, if you do not use the A.ANT lead, pull that out of the harness. In the AVIC-D1 harness, there is one open spot on the connector (next to the ground wire). Put the wire into the open spot on the connector, connect the other side to ground, then re-connect the plug to the AVIC-D1. Also, you must ground the Parking Brake wire (or connect to a toggle switch if you feel the need).
Thats it, all there is to it, and all the lockouts are bypassed. Easy, give it a try.

P.S. now to figure out how to get into the service menus. I know they exist because i see them in the firmware, but i haven't been quite able to figure out how to activate them!

The N1 with old software. The updated N1's, N2's and D1's reference the VSS and gps velocity as well to determine whether or not you are moving.

$30 or so on e-bay will buy a portable DVD player which you can just hook into the aux-in on this baby. (perhaps put the actual player in the glovebox or under the seat). If this bypass works you should then be able to watch aux whenever (even while driving).

P.S. i'm only like 70% satisfied with the teleatlas routing in the pioneers. It's adequate, but there are still many quirks with the routes generated. Frankly, the routis nav software (navtech) I had on my PDA was much more reliable in generating sane routes! I still have very limited experience with my D1, but the proposed routes have disappointed me a few times already.
Other than that, the product has been excellent.
I also cannot vouch for this bypass trick. I've seen posts claiming it works, but haven't tried it myself yet.... won't have time to open up the dash again until after my prelim... ******* hardest exam ever. 3 days long, 12 subjects (4 we haven't taken classes on yet).

Glad to hear it! Makes me feel a lot better about attempting it myself.

I Just Purchased The Pioneer Avic N2 In Dash Unit For My 6th Gen, I Also Have Aftermarket Subs And A Amp, Which Are Still Working Fine. Although I Notice The Pio Isn't As Loud, As I Expected/should Be. Volume Goes Up To 62, Which Sounds Like It's Really At 52, The Bose Headunit Seemed As Though It Was Louder. At First I Thought It Was Just Me, But I Don't Think So.
Does This Have To Do With The Adapter From Pac Mentioned Above? Somebody Help

Yeah, so far so good. The unit is dead on, very frequent updates/fluid motion. It's also never lost satellite signal.
However, I haven't tried it without the VSS connected...

I got the N2 and I love it. GPS works great except for today when it wacked out a little bit. Popped the Navi DVD back in and it repositioned itself.
- good info on the bypass - but too bad it voids the warranty
- I put in a switch to bypass the navi system but doesn't work on the dvd playback.

I saw this last week and did it.
The sticker doesn't say anything about void if removed, Dropped in a bit of solder and I'm good to go, everything works as if it did not have a lock out, + you can watch DVD's while driving.
I'm still up in the air about this voiding the warranty. Even the brain, has void if removed stickers, but this does not.
I'm a million times more happy with my avic N2 now.

Bump:
When I had my N1 I could watch videos during driving and I had no warnings or anything about a parking brake. Obviously I never drove and watched DVDs but when it comes to the D1 if I get it installed will I be able to use the navi while driving? Also, what did the shop do when they installed my N1 that allowed me to drive and watch DVDs?

I waited for months for the D-1 to come out - only to find out it did not play DVDs. I was bummed because I otherwise would really have loved to get it. I went with the Kenwood 8017.
