Hi, i'm very new in the department of car audio, so please just bare with me. I don't listen to a lot of rap or techno, all i'm really interested in is mostly rock or variations of it (punk..etc). Anyway, i've seen many head units, which i'll admit look very cool and am wondering what would be the best setup for me in terms of a head unit and maybe speakers, i'm thinking about not wasting money on subs because you don't need that much bass in rock music do you? and speakers would probably help for the sound i want. Also i'm not interested in blowing anymore then $500 on the whole setup, maybe $600 at most....what suggestions do you have for the setup, i have no problems buying parts off of E-bay, but any suggestions would be helpful and please mention the brands that i should buy just to help me out as much as possible, thanks! by the way, if it came down to it, i'd chose to have better sound (speakers) over a head unit which looks cool but would very much like to have a setup that combines both. thanks

For $500-600, you can get a decent HU (you don't need anything fancy for simple stereo playback), a decent pair of speakers for the front doors (power the stock rear speakers with the HU), a 4-channel amp, and an 8" sub. I recommend getting a sub. Modern rock music has a good bit of low-frequency information that door-mounted 6.5s aren't gonna be able to reproduce. So if you really want to enjoy the music, get the aforementioned setup and power the front speakers with the first channel pair of the amp and power the sub with the second channel pair bridged mono. A decent 8 will be perfect for rock and won't require a lot of power or space.
