Q about FG enclosures

So I've seen alot of boxes that are fully fiberglass... do these types of boxes use those thin walls that the fiberglass makes as the enclosure it self?? It just seems that the sound wouldn't be as good as with some thicker material... what am I missing here?

I guess they use a box thats built to a certain size then glass over it? I dont know, someone explain please

you have to build it to not flex. glass unlike wood is strongest in the curves, as well this adds to the originality factor. if done properly you can make a box that is just as if not sturdier than a mdf box of whatever thickness. Usually i make mine in the usual manner then from there work to finish the front, sanding and everything upfront, then work on strength after by kitty hairing and resining from behind. My woofer box for four twelves was glassed completely on the top but the base ws about 3 inches thick due to the four subs sharing a common chamber.

Its really alot easier than you would think,, and it all lies in preparation and patiencce. My next enclosure will be glassed as well for originalities sake, i think i still have a page loaded somewhere with pics and a walk through that i can try to dig up. Metal Maxima has a very indepth documentation of his buildup if you havent seen it.

To even more simplify...Fiberglass is more dense than MDF,Birch,etc...

You can do it in a manner where you complete an enclosure and glass around that to form it to the trunk like metal, or you can go about a fully glassed piece and figure airspace as you go along hoping to get it right and possibly stuffing the hell out of the box.
You can do so much with it and if done properly make it look like it was all a part of the car. It definitely ensures noone has just what you have and keeps you honest in a way...i miss my old car...
