Well not "struts" gas shocks I think is what they were called. Go to your local decent auto parts store. Each one will prob have different brand names, but the ones I used were "Strong Arm" model number 4449. If I remember right, they were about 17,18, or 19 inches.

Main thing is to make sure the size is about right (if it's a little off, that would just affect where you mount them a lil) and that the ends are flat plain ends...not some of the shocks that have round or funkily mounted ends. BOUT SIDES should have a "normal" flat mounting hold that makes it easy to get it in there tight with nuts and bolts. Below is the best pic I have of the strut casing and the flat ends before mounting...

And of course the mounting

Major thing I learned that you should not have to learn for yourself....If you choose to attach the gas shocks with the torsion bars still on, the force of the combination of the two will likely leave your trunk not able to shut flush. This worried me for a few days and caused me to run back and try new sizes over and over again. Turns out, when I cut off the torsion bars, so much of the pressure was gone that it then shut flush. I'd open your trunk all the way, measure the approxomite area of shock that you'll need when fully open using the approxomate areas I mounted, get a shock of that size amking sure ends are flat, mount em, then cut off the torsion bars and you're golden. Took me days before, I could prolly do it in an hour now that I've done it.

Good luck!

Could you have mounted the shocks higher up if the length was the same on the rear deck side? If not how about if the strut was shorter?

Subs are mounted to two 3/4" pieces of Marine Grade Plywood (Birch or many treated plywoods would do here over MDF. MDF is heavier, more likely to show the effects of moisture, and would flex more. Thes two pieces of wood together don't move/flex at all w/ subs going full tilt. It's actually such an easy install acutally. You don't need the straight cuts/table saw that you would need to build your own box. Waaay easier than building a box! The piece of wood you don't see was cut to sink up into the opening. Then of course the whole thing was bolted up to the different layers of the rear deck. Bolts countersunk of course. As yuo can see, there's a lil car modification necessary (cutting off the bars/sealing trunk from cabin) but the pople that avoid IB cause they think it's difficult...well I disagree. Just a lil work.

And I do think I could have mounted them further up if I had used shorter shocks.

The day I took off the torsion bars, I didn't have access to my buddy who has a compressor with the metal cut off wheel. That would git er done in minutes. So instead I used my angle grinder. took a few extra minutes, but not much. I need air!

I think there is a much easier way to do it on a 4th gen though. I'll post pics when I finish it.
