Crappy radio reception...

I know nobody really cares about AM/FM reception, but it is nice to have in traffic and whatnot. And yes, I have posted about this before, but I'm back to it because I haven't been able to find a cure yet.

I started by trying to reground the HU. I have had it grounded in probably three different places now, and the current ground is definitely good. Then I tried buying a "hide-away" internal antenna from crutchfield. (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-o9LHjBh...na&i=12044UA20) That hasn't helped at all, and if anything, made my reception worse. I will be removing it today or tomorrow to return it.

The next thing I'm going to try seems a little strange; I read about it in an old thread over on the caraudio.com forums. I figured I'd ask over here to get a quicker answer from somebody like Don perhaps. The guy over there suggested attaching a long piece of 16-20 awg wire and running it behind the dash, through the pillars, etc. He basically said just run the wire for as long as you can and anywhere in the car. I guess I'm supposed to attach that wire to the positive (outside) connection on the antenna lead and then just run a ground to the negative (inner) connection on the lead.

Does this sound like something that might actually work? I know that signals won't go through metal, so I don't see how running a wire behind a bunch of metal panels is going to help.

Also, I just read that part of the problem with the reception could be due to one or both of my amps. I suppose there's nothing to do about that (and no I won't give my amps away to Avi ).

Thanks guys.

I don't see how the amps would affect the reception, that makes little sense. Sorry I really can offer no help.

I know with those cheap alarm clock radios, they come with a wire all wrapped up sticking out the back. It is used as an antenna and you can hear the 'reception changes' as you move it around. Maybe the same concept will work in the car. Either way, good luck!

Yeah, I was actually thinking that a few hours after I posted. Maybe I'll give this a shot tomorrow.
