Putting larger subs in stock rear-deck openings?

I dont know if this is even recommended, but I thought I'd ask if anyone had opinions. I've got a nice sub box in my trunk with 2 10" subs and an amp. I like having it, though I'm not blasting music as much anymore, and would really like to recover the lost trunk space. Is it possible to cut the openings larger where the stock subs are (which are not in use) and put the 10" there?

Any thoughts would be welcomed!

it'll work if the subs are free-air compatible. i'd check with the manufacturer's information regarding free-air use first.

They make what is called "Free Air" subwoofers. They're slightly stiffer than the normal sub woofer. This type of application that you're describing is the exact reason they make these speakers. They are a boxless subwoofer that can be mounted on a panel as long as there is some seperation between the front and read sound wave, which you'll get on the back deck. I doubt your truck's 2 10's are free air since you mentioned that they are in a box. And they probably need to stay in some type of chamber to keep their sound. So you can actually do what you're thinking, but make sure you have the right type of woofer, or the results may be less than expected.

Here's a link to Crutchfield's "Free Air" section of their component Sub Woofers. It's easier for me to find this type of speaker here on their web site, but I would check local dealers for better prices on the same part numbers. You might save some money.

Are there many free air subs that get that loud though. I know some Jls are free air, other than that I have no idea. I bet that Rl-p sounds nice eh? I almost purchased one a while back but decided to wait on the system thing.

they are Audiobahn subs, dont have the exact model # handy, and I've put in an email to them to ask about this. Hmmmm.... Are free-air subs any more expensive than regular ones for similar specs?

well "loud" is sorta subjective to the person listening to the system. but like mentioned above, you have to completely seal off the trunk and the cabin to get best results. there are some people that did an IB setup with the RL-p, and yielded great results in terms of output and sq.

and yeah, the RL-p is nice . i've yet to put it into the 6th gen though. all my audio stuff is crammed into my room for the time being.

No. It just means that the spider and surround are a little stiffer. Any sub can be run in an IB (infinite baffle configuration). Will they all sound good? No. You can easily simulate how the sub will perform by modeling it in WinISD or Unibox. Choose a sealed enclosure and make sure the size is at least 10 times the Vas of the driver (as in sub, not car ).

Image Dynamics ID8 or I think Diamond may make one....

The JL 8"IB4 is no longer avaliable unless you can find it used, and is a heck of a MIDbass (not sub-bass) driver. Not sure if they're making any new 8" made for freeair apps, but I know the W7 is not meant for IB/freeair use.

So if you had to pick the best sub with shaking spl, and good sq powered by a 1000x1 @2ohms Rockford Fosgate 1001bd, what would you pick?

I thought about a JL 10W7, how would a Flatline be IB? Would one 10" or 12" IB be enough? What kind of SPL level would you expect?
Or would you try for two 10's in a sealed box mounted under the rear deck with part of it cut open to let the bass in the cabin a little better?

I had the ID8 v.3 in the stock Bose location in my 2001. I gotta say for an 8" in free air it worked pretty well. Sounddomain still has them in stock:

JL no longer makes a free air so you would have to find one used if you decide to go that route.

I think one FL in a TL enclosure would work.

The ID XXv.3's all play down to 10 hz as per there factory specs. The idmax's only play to 20 hz. I don't know that sort of caught my eye.

I was also thinking about replacing my bose sub in the back for a 10". I just inherited a 500 watt mtx amp and now i am shopping for the free air sub. But my question is do i have to rewire my car for that sub and amp to run with the rest of the bose components. and i do not have an after market hu.

First off keep in mind how low 10 hz is. No music is going to have 10 hz. WELL WELL below what you can hear. No 8's going to go there. As for the IDMAX, I've always loved it's tonality but thought it could always extend a tad lower (again, to the point where it doesn't really matter with musi...notes that music is generally not going to hit), though it always bothered me when listening to the IASCA track that was supposed to hit down to 15 or 16 hz (superman track towards the end of the song). Now, with two of the IB'd it hits those notes

Though I'd say, don't bother worryng about 10 hz. You're never gonna hear/feel it in music. Donno why they'd make that spec.
