The guy I bought the EF 28-135mm IS from let me play with his L glass (24-70mm F/2.8L and 70-200mm F/2.8L IS) and a 10-22mm. He does it for a living (20D with a 10D backup) and it was a very mean thing for him to do

Another question in regards to your above post of the lenses. The EF.S mounts are designed for the 350D and of course others, but the EF would or would not work with it?

 

na, it's not bad at all, but it can be kind of harsh at times. Also remember I'm speaking from a level much higher than just point and shoot photography. A hot flash really helps with illuminating everything and helps with harsh shadows. Everything just becomes smooth and natural. You can also really play with lighting a lot more with angles and stuff, bouncing off walls/etc.

Just forget I ever mentioned it (atleast for a few months ). Me = sucker for the toys

 

For the time being Im sticking with just what comes with the camera. The built in flash and the lens. Although not up to par with you, itll suffice the wife for awhile and my A70 is pwned.

Dont worry, Im a sucker for toys as well. I always like to have things, depsite the fact I dont use em. I still have a Sony Clie I got about a year ago that I never used and need to sell, but it was cool to have at the time.

Now if we got into car audio/video/security I would run away with the "more money spent" trophy over you.

 

Although a tripod may be needed as well for family pics.

 

All EF lenses work on a EF-S mount
EF-S lenses do not work on a EF mount (unless you modify them, but there really isn't a point in doing that)



EF-S mounts = APS-C sensors = 300D, 350D, 20D, 30D
300D = Digital Rebel
350D = Digital Rebel XT
30D = updated 20D, really not that much has changed, kind of disappointing.

EF mounts would be
D30, D60, 10D (older models)
5D, 1D series



For what it's worth:
Canon 5D = $3200 ish, full frame camera, 12.8mp, full frame, no built in flash, full frame, etc lol.
Canon 1Ds Mark II = $7500 ish, full frame, uber fast, 16.7mp, full frame and uber fast, no built in flash, full frame, etc.

basically professional cameras, just fun to dream about

Sorry, I was kind of getting a head of myself earlier. Buy the kit, take pictures until you're tired of it, then take more . And don't borrow other peoples stuff, because then you will want it, and that's bad heheheheh.

Tripod, definately going to want. I just have a cheapy one (<$40 - Christmas present from my stepsisters). Also spend the $20 or whatever on a remote, you'll never have to set, run, and guess again . They have an infrared one, I think it's called the RC-1 ? I have never used or seen it. I have the RS-60E3 which is wired. It's nice for doing long exposure tripod shots and such, but wouldn't work well with family portraits because it only has a ~2' cord.

Also Compact Flash prices have dropped insanely

I can get 115 shots in RAW mode on the 1gb card.

(RAW = 16bit, jpg = 8bit. RAW = oh so nice to work with .... adjusting white balance/etc. you'll see )

Im glad it uses the CF as I have a few and itll still work with my A70.

Truth of the matter is that unless you really "Blow up" the picture to critique it, most digital (SLR or other) are great at 4X6 print sizes.

Below is a link to a "full file" jpg (3.2MB)shot on my 20D with a 28-135 IS lens... It was shot at 1/30 sec and 400 ISO because it was "gloomy"... If you download it and click on "properties" it will tell you more information on the advanced tab...

For your budget... a Rebel XT with that above lens would be about 1K or so. the 17-85EF-s lense is great but you wouldn't be able to use it on a 1Ds if you ever got it.

One thing you might try.... see if you shoot around 50mm (or the long end of the kit lens). If you do, you might consider picking up the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 MK-II link. Not so much right off the bat, but if just take a look at your pictures after a month or two and see if you spend enough time around 50mm end to see if you would use it. The reason is it is a fast lens, and you can't really beat the price. I have a feeling you might use it more with portraits and stuff (probably spend a lot of time zoomed in on your kids/etc) and it performs really well indoors and really low light conditions.

Personally I don't have one because I don't really shoot around 50mm that much. The more I think about it though, It seems like a good idea because it could force me to shoot in a different way then I'm used to and just change things up.

i was gonna suggest the Canon SD550. pocketsized, also kickass picture quality. they're going for about ~400. but congrats on your purchase . it's a nice camera

i personally got hooked when my friend let me mess with his 35mm EOS-1V with a canon 70-200 4L. that lense was sweet. super quick focus (hella lot faster than the kit lense's focus).

 

Its all good. Im happy with it and being an SLR was the most important part for me. AT least this way its always "upgradeable".

I have a pretty nice backpack (not a camera bag, but I can't wear two backpacks at once....well easily anyway). I think it would be handy for hikes and stuff though, but I'll have to wait on a backpack style.


My Dad keeps telling me I need to buy one of these. He has one on his old Minolta SLR, I think it'd be nice for protection and stuff, but I don't think I would really use it. Plus the price (why so $$$ ), and the 17-85mm won't work with it (that makes it really easy for me).
