thats the 8500's normal sequence if it cant calibrate itself. You just have to take it to a dealer and have them look at it, its not going to work right until you do so

depending on where you bought the unit, you might have to send this back to Escort. Escort has a warranty of a year unless you purchased the additional 2 years warranty. Paulm is right, the detector is not 'booting up correctly' so it needs to go in for service. If you purchased this detector from the store, hopefully its covered under the store warranty, if not, and its under a year, check with Escort. If not, send it into Escort and see what they say. If the repair is under $75.00, I would go for it. Anything over that, you can get another one on Fleabay.

oh, just found this on the escort site

http://www.escortradar.com/servproc.htm

Escort Product Service Procedure

If your Escort product is ever in need of service, please follow these steps:

* Check the appropriate troubleshooting section in your owner's manual (copies of some radar detector and other Escort product manuals are available online). It may have a solution to your problem.
* Call us at 800-543-1608, Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm Eastern time. We may be able to solve your problem over the phone. If the problem requires that you send your Escort product to the factory for repair, we will provide you with a SERVICE ORDER NUMBER, which must be included on the outside of your shipping box.

Enclose the following information with your Escort product:

* Your Service Order Number
* Your name and return address
* Your daytime telephone number
* A description of the problem you are experiencing
* Your sales receipt or dated proof of purchase unless you ordered directly from Escort. (As a courtesy, we maintain order records for customers who purchase directly from us.)

If you purchase an Escort product from an authorized reseller, the Escort warranty will be honored only if you can provide us with a copy of the original invoice. We cannot honor any third party invoices that you may receive from an individual, auction, internet site or other unauthorized reseller.

NOTE: For out of warranty repairs, include prepayment in the amount you were quoted by the Escort Customer Service Representative. If your Escort product has been damaged, abused or modified, the repair cost will be calculated on a parts and labor basis. If it exceeds the basic repair charge, you will be contacted with a quotation. If the additional payment is not received within 30 days (or if you notify us that you choose not to have your Escort product repaired at the price quoted), your Escort product will be returned, without repair. Payment can be made by check, money order or credit card.

Mail your Escort product (and cord, if applicable) to:

Escort, Inc.
Customer Service Department
Service Order Number ______________
5440 West Chester Rd.
West Chester, OH 45069-2950

For your own protection, we recommend that you ship your Escort product postpaid and insured. Insist on a proof of delivery and keep the receipt until the return of your Escort product.

Hell, even if it costs more than 75 dollars, you're not going to find an X50 for under 250 on ebay. If it saves you one more time, the service is paid for
