Signal Puller/enhancer?

Hey guys, I recently told my brother about my problems with my radio reception on my aftermarket head unit and he claimed that his friend had a "signal puller" installed on his previous car so that when the radio signal began to get choppy all he had to do was turn it on and it pulled in another signal to make it come through stronger and clearer. Anyone ever hear of such a device or a similar device? any help is much appreciated

Amplified antenna is what I'm thinking, especially if you have to turn it on, indicating a power source involved.
