has anyone ever worked as an installer

hey im looking to get a job either at best buy or circuit city this summer doing stereo installs and possibly security system installs. does anyone know how much they start at per hour? also, do you have to have training or is self taught and proven experience good enough?

Do you have any experience at all?

They will start you VERY small, working with someone, I'd assume. If you're good and in it for the long haul I'd imagine they MAY pay for advanced training and get you certified.

I could be dead wrong though, Kevin is an installer at a store, he can elaborate? I've never worked at CC/BB.

I'm a Sales and Installation Manager at a Circuit City. They usually start you out at around $10.00/hr. around here. Of course demographics plays a big role in that. It is not required that you are MECP Certified, but you will have to take a lot of E-learning courses as well as work with someone for a period of about 90 days. During those 90 days, you cannot qualify for bonuses. After your training period, you can get bonuses based on your point productivity. Most Roadshops will only let you work up to your level, so they wont throw hard cars at you or hard installs right away. You would have to be a seasoned installer to take on those. At least thats how we do at my shop. Our installers are probably some of the best in the business (my store). We are #1 in our region and continue to strive further. Probably because I run our location as though it was a mom and pop shop. We have even gone the extra mile as to train our installers to do fiberglassing for custom jobs.

Pay starts at 9.25 at the two CC's Ive worked at. Youll start at less at Best Buy. They pay based on experience/MECP certs, whereas CC doesnt care about MECP. Besides that, its basically what NightRider said. I started in sales and had done some installs on my own, so my 'training' period when I transferred to the install bay lasted all of a couple weeks before I was on my own, still working up to the harder installs of course.

NightRider, who does this fiberglass training you speak of? Just other experienced installers?

Yeah, I have 2 installers that are very experienced...one that has 10 years of CC experience and is MECP Certified, and another that managed a Tweeter Custom installation shop. They, along with myself work very closely with the newer guys to get them up to par.
