Z1 Installed... Pics inside.
HI guys. Finally got my digi cam and snapped some photos of the newly installed Z1. It is an awesome unit and I highly recommend it for someone who needs all of the features. I got the XM Navtraffic module, iPod adapter, and the bluetooth adapter to go along with it. Everything works flawless and sounds good. I am running an Arc Kar 400.4 amp, Rainbow SLC for the front, and Rainbow SL165 for the rear. The sub is also a Rainbow Hammer 12" with a Diamond D3400.2 amp. All install was done by djfrestyl except for the sub which was also done by Don
Also there is a scratch on the kit on the right side as you will see. I plan to fix this with your help. I also would like to make evrything flush so if you guys could recommend how I could make this kit flush I would appreciate it. I'm assuming I will need some kind of plastic filler for this correct? Anyway here are the pics.

wait which part do I need to sand? Wouldn't sanding make it smaller? It seems like it is short on mine on the bottom where it meets the climate control. I need to fill that gap in somehow no? Im not understanding why mine is short and yours fits fine.
I believe the installer mounted it in the holes that would give the best fit (otherwise he would have picked the right ones) so Im assuming I will need to make my own holes. Is that difficult?
And I still dont see what I need to sand because it seems that my kit is smaller than yours somehow because of the gap I have on the bottom?
*EDIT* Also any ideas on how to fix the scratch. I'm pretty sure just spray pain will not fix it because it is a little deep.

The install looks crappy. The dash kit wasn't even mounted correctly. Why is it going underneath the vents at the top? The cuts along the dash kit are really wavey. The unit needs to be moved back some aswell, it shouldn't stick out that much.
And to answer ur pm, yeah I'm from Ukraine too

haha are you serious? Where in Ukraine?
I have no idea why the kit is going underneath the dash. The installer said thzt is happening because it is a crappy kit and I should get the gxe kit with some abs plastic to fix the gap in order for it to look good... I think Im going to be taking it apart this weekend and try to fix things but I have no idea how (thats why I paid to have it installed). I agree the cuts are all wavy but I am afraid if I sand that part it will create some space between the unit itself and the kit because the cuts are uneven. What do you think? Also is there anything I can do about the scratches all over the kit?

That kit is garbage now. You will need to get a new one. It's actually a really nice kit, I liked it a lot.
Just buy a new 1 and try it yourself. It's not hard to do. Or come here and I can help you with it. Shouldn't take any longer than 15 mins.
Hmm does anyone have it installed with the GXE Kit? It shouldnt be that much different from the D1..even though yea the Z1 is a 7 inch screen BUT the buttons are alot smaller than the D1 ... My D1 fits pretty damn flush with the kit and that lil black plastic frame that comes with the unit filled in the gap on the bottom pretty well... in other words might the D1 have the same dimensions as the Z1 ?? I hope so...

Also how easy is it to make your own mounting holes? I have never done anything like this before so I'm a total newb. Thanks for the help Igor. How far away are you from NYC?
This kit will not fit with this unit properly without drilling into the chassis of the radio to make new mounting holes. Do you wanna do that? It is not a good fit for some reason the mounting holes of the Z1 are in odd locations.
I guess if that is what I have to do. I thought tht the drilling part is into the brackets and not the unit. I guess I was mistaken. Do you guys think it is safe to do? Has it been done before? What sucks is I just realized the vents are scratched up also which sucks. But anyway is it a bad idea to make new mounting holes?
Yea I see its gonna be a pain but I have to do this. What exactly do you mean by counter sinking the brackets?
Also I just spoke to igor911 and he said that the reason why my steering wheel button was not working when nilesh tried to program it is because I have to ground one wire. Im still getting the details from him now so that is good news. Now if someone could help me out with these mounting holes that would awesome.

Your vents have been pulled out a total of 3 times. Two of which were by me, and 2 of which you saw with your own d@mn eyes how messed up those clips are.
You would need new holes and longer screws.

k thanks. Just to make sure the holes have to be drilled in the head unit itself? Also how would I figure out where a whole needs to be per se.
Also the pic that igor911 we have the same vents right? So all I have to do is make the new holes and it should fit just like Igor's correct?

No, in the brackets. Why in God's name would you drill INTO an expensive electronic unit?
Yea you have the same vents. Your last question is too general. Your vents are fcuked up (missing a clip) and you have a LOT of crap crammed behind your HU, making the radio brackets themselves a pain to get mounted.

Okay so could any please tell me how to do this? How exactly do I figure out where the holes need to be made?
okay. Does any have any pics of the brackets? I havent taken my dash apart and want to know what i will be looking at. Are the brackets already attached to the navi? Do they slide in, etc.. Please elaborate on ur answers since Ive never done this before I would like to know exactly what brackets I need to be looking at.
Will they come out with the navi or will i have to drill holes while it is inside the dash?

The brackets are two metal pieces that runs from behind your ashtray to behind your center air vents. Your A/C and Z1 are both mounted to it.
If you can't find these brackets, do not attempt to do this yourself.
Oh, and just to add.
In a 5.0 gen, there is NO wire that needs to be grounded. The brown/white needs to be grounded in a 5.5 gen for the trip computer to work. That is not the reason why the steering wheel controls didn't work.

oh igor's was 5.5 gen? I hope not because I got all excited!!!
By the way Nilesh you forgot to put the screw in where the ash tray is!
Thanks for the pics.
I figured I would start with the kit first. It seems like I need to sand some more on the inside at the top (does that make sense?) It seems that this would allow the kit to move down more to reach the climate controls and still be touching at the top. Am I correct?
Now for the brackets. Do I take them out completely with the climate control and everything?

I didn't forget, you have so much stuff crammed behind your dash that the bracket for the ashtray screw doesnt line up with the hole anymore.
Yes, unplug everything and remove the entire piece...climate control and all.
Do you think I should move something out of the dash then to make space. Because if it doesnt line up that means something is not going to be flush... Plus it will create more air back there, no?
Okay I unplugged the climate control but I left the navi there and didnt unplug anything because Im not sure I would remember where everything goes... Now time to measure and drill.
Actually I measured before hand but need to re-measure again.
Also Nilesh do you have a link to the manual on how to program the PAC Im gonna try to do it since I have everything apart already.

lol you guys are way too funny comon! I took the navi out of the brackets but left the navi in the car still connected!
It looks like I might need longer screws because when I drill the new holes they apear in spots that are elevated on the bracket. Does any1 know the diameter of the screw that I need? And igor the wire you told me to ground is that for the 5.5 gen and wont work for me right?
Also Im going to need to buy a dremel and I guess a special sanding bit right? Any suggestions on which bit and dremel I will need to buy? I will go to HD shortly when I will need to pick up the longer screws.
Also Nilesh I will get spray paint for the kit. But if that doesnt help with the scratches you made on it will you re-emburce me for it since I would have to waste money and get a new one.
