pls help - static coming from speakers

A couple days ago, I started getting interrmittent static from my speakers whenever the HU is turned on. These periods of static will last anywhere from a second to a minute or more. The static will come from all 4 speakers. The loudness of the static coming from each speaker remains constant if I even if adjust the HU's volume, fader and/or balance controls. The static seems to come and go whenever it wants. The static may come and go when I am driving around town or even if I am parked with the engine off. The static may come and go when I am listening to the radio or a cd. If the turn the HU off, there will be no static.

The only bit of troubleshooting I've done is disconnect the digital audio cable that runs from the HU to the "brain". - No difference, static still exists.

FYI, my HU is an Eclipse AV8022 flip-out monitor (approx. 3 years old), and my is amp a Rockford Fosgate 600a4 (approx 7 years old - has never given me any problems). The HU is connected to the "brain" which in turn, turns on the amp whenever the HU is on via the remote signal wire.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For starters......Possibly find a better grounding point for the source unit. Check your RCA connections from the source unit to the amp. Make a better ground connection for the amp. Are you using 4 RCA's (front and rear) as inputs to the amp or only 2?

The HU has a single digital audio cable that connects to the brain (source unit, as you call it). The brain has 3 sets of RCAs [2 sets (F&R) go to my RF 600a4 amp and 1 set (subwoofer) goes to my RF 500a2 amp]. I use the terminals of my capacitor as both a power and ground distribution block for the amps. The static only comes from the interior car speakers. I can't hear any static from the sub.

Try this trick to see if this changes anything....disconnect the rear RCA's going into the amp, then switch the 2/4 channel input switch over to "2". Does that change anything? It's only a test.

I know the speaker wire connections to the amp for 2 channel and 4 channel should be different. Before I try the test, should I change the wiring configuration because something may be damaged? Or will it be fine? Thanks for your help.

Sorry, didn't check the org over the weekend. No need to reconfigure the speaker outputs on the amp. All you're doing is telling the amp that you're running two inputs to feed all four outputs.

Thanks...I will try your test as soon as I can. Here's an update though to my problems though - in addition to the interrmittent static, the interior speakers will now sometimes cut out for seconds at a time (subwoofer still works fine). I hope all these things aren't saying that my 7-yr old amp powering my interior speakers is on its last legs.

A friend of mine who works in a car audio shop says that I should first test the impedance of each speaker because he says a single speaker that is shorting itself out can 1) cause noise throughout system and 2) the amp can shut itself off for brief periods of time to protect itself.

Or maybe my amp is dying. I hope not.

Your friend may be right. I'd think if the amp was dying, it would have gone by now. What shop are you talking about? You can PM me if the noise continues after the RCA trick.

NEED HELP! Sub static/ popping noise

Sorry to raise this thread from the dead, but I cant start my own thread yet.

Equipment:
-kenwood 9103D amp
-2 kicker cvr 12" 4 ohm
-Rockford Fosgate 4 Ga wiring kit
I am having this weird static and popping noise from my aftermarket subs whenever i turn my car on. It is more of wierd popping noises then a static sound, and is generally the worst for the first 30 seconds after starting my car. Sometimes it stops occuring when i turn the music up but other times it will occur no matter what. Whenever the radio is turned completely off, it still occurs and its driving me nuts. I am using a scoshe LOC tapped from rear sub. I have taken the RCA inputs out and the noise is still there, so im pretty sure its not from the LOC or RCA cables. I also wired the subs in 2ohm and 4 ohm and no difference (except subs dont hit as hard
at 4 ohm although popping noise seems to be the same no matter what)

Would the noise be from my power wire if its ran through firewall grommet, under kickpanels (next to factory wire bundle) on passenger side?

OR, from a bad ground connection? Im guessing its the ground but I dont know where to ground in the 6th gen. I took a dremmel to the sheet metal under trunk lining by spare tire and completely removed all paint/finish down to shiny bare metal. I have my ground bolted to this pretty tight so im not sure if this is sufficient. (ground lead is supposedly platinum coated)

Sorry for the long post and thread jack but this has been driving me nuts!!! Please help, any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Exotic
