Poor Subwoofer Response

Alright, I wanted a basic sub/amp setup to fill in what the bose lacks for low end. I went with a RF2002, P112S4 (i think, its a 12" Punch 1, single VC, 4 ohm), and a 1.25 cu ft box.

I have the amp bridged, and the factory sheet said ~230 watts RMS. The sub is rated for 150 RMS, but obviously it plays nicely at lower volume. My only problem with the situation, is as I get the volume to > 50%, it is loud, but lacks any dynamic-ness....Just kind of blah blah blah blah bass......

I'm running it with the stock bose HU, and i've got the signal that goes to the right rear bose amp going to the RF amp, with the positive power wire to the RR bose amp going to the REM terminal on the RF. The LPF is set to 70hz.

Is there any way I could clean it up? Would a new or different type box make a difference? Any help is appreciated, of course!

New sub/amp are going to be the only thing that will help you out here.

cheaper fix is put it in a smaller box. it'll tighten up the bass somewhat, but your low end will suffer.

ported, or sealed box? if it's sealed, it seems like it's in the right box. if it's ported, you might actually need one slightly bigger.

make sure it's in phase, too.

in the end, you might just not be happy with a budget setup

Its sealed.... I dont think I am happy with budget.... I'm an audiophile, and for what I paid for it all, it did the job, but I need better quality. I dont even care about sheer loudness, just want accurate punchy bass, and to hear all of the music.

from what i remember, fosgate's have never been known for punchy bass...the power hx2s i had handled ~20hz, running bass than the quick response bass. ebay that set up and get a jlaudio 12w6v2...you'll be a lot more happy.

I've got a friend that will buy it from me for 350, so that could turn out very nicely. that W6 looks to be ~300 shipped on eBay, does that sound good?

What kind of amp should I use for it? i noticed its a DVC, so would wiring the coils in series lower the impedance, allowing me to use a lower powered amp to the same effect? (not lower than the RF2002, just lower in general, like 400RMS x1 @ 2 ohms)

That amp should be okay for it. You'll want a ported enclosure that's 1.77 cu.ft. gross with a single 4" port that's 11" long, tuned at 37Hz. Call RF and get yourself a Punch Bass ****(PB1). This allows you to boost the output at 45Hz. Or get the ParaPunch Bass **** (PPB1) that allows you to shift the frequency and boost as well. The RF2002 is more or less useless as a bass amp without the bass ****. That amp is the same as the P2002, just doesn't have chrome on the top and the fancy light show.

Well I'm probably getting rid of the 2002 and upgrading to something else... What would you recommend in that case?

porting that sub will not make the bass any tighter, it'll just make it louder. put that sub in a smaller sealed box.

The older RF equipment was nice. I've been noticing that the newer RF equipment is just horrbile for the price you pay. I mean, personally I would purchase AudioBahn equipment over RF nowadays.
For an amp, look around on fleabay for an old Precision Power Art series amplifier. By today's standards, those are still highly sought after as they produced extremely clean power. For a sub, look into a company called Elemental Designs. Their "K" series subs are inexpensive and really impressive. The build quality is next to nothing, they have really great SQ, high efficiency so you don't need a huge and and they produce large ammounts of undistorted bass if put in the right enclosure. Not to mention they also have a really nice warrenty.

well since i haven't pushed for SS products in awhile...sell that fosgate sub and get a 12" Sound Splinter RL-p. Very musical sub IMO.

Wiring the coils in parallel will lower the resistance. Wiring in series raises the resistance.

A single P212S4 would be a better match to the RF2002 amp. Better power handling @ 200Wrms/400peak and larger voice coil to dissapate more heat. If you're looking for tighter, more accurate bass, and better power handling then go .85 cu.ft. sealed. Set your low pass filter to 80Hz......IMO.

try this, if your amp can take both L & R signal inputs while producing a bridged output, see if you hear an improvement. sounds lame but could work.
