Stock Bose - Sirus FM Modulator Noise
Stock Bose - Sirus FM Modulator Noise
I've got a stock Bose in my 2000 GLE, and a Sirius Starmate Replay.
I installed it with a hardwired FM modulator & 2 antenna adapters. So I have no problem with static anymore.
But now I have a whining sound that matches the engine speed. I heard once this is called alternator noise.
The installer at Circuit City car audio gave me an activated sirius radio from his display to hook up and test, and no noise. He suggested when I do install a cig. lighter behind the dash that I use a direct ground and not tap into the back of the existing ligher's ground.
Obviously it's my Starmate Replay, but is there anything I can do to stop this noise?

Sirius sells a filter that goes inline with the hardwire. I have no idea where to get it, i just know from working at RS people have told me that they got them "from sirius" and it removed the alternator noise. Or if it simply is just a ground issue, why not ground to one of the bolts behind the head unit assembly?
Now that I think about it I'm not sure I heard it this morning on the way to work. Now I will listen for it later. I also googled alternator noise filter and found a crutchfield how to guide... http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/IS...de.html?page=2
Yesterday I installed my second cig. lighter behind the factory one, and tapped the red wire, then instead of tapping the black, I used a self tapping screw and drove in a new ground into the metal support behind the ash tray.

Ok, after installing the cig lighter with a good ground & accidently turned my stereo up really loud because of some dead airtime right when I turned it on, and I could still hear the noise, but it's so faint once the dead air was over I couldn't hear it at all.
That works for me! I just glad I don't have to go find a noise suppressor.
